I am very interested in UMD for Computer Science but would like to know my chances for Honors Program. I know it is very competitive.

GPA: 3.9
Weighted: 4.5
9th and 10th:all Honors Classes with a couple of APs (all A's)
11th and 12th: switched to full dual enrollment program so all classes are university level (almost all A's)
ACT: 33 (33M, 32E, 32R, 33S)
EC's: robotics, programming competitions, technology assistant at school, volunteer webmaster for nonprofit charter schools, nhs, vp or school community service club, formed organization to teach programming to middle school students at low-performing schools.
Recommendations: Very Good
Essays: Very Good

Born in Maryland but moved to Florida 8 years ago.

You’re a cinch for Honors, even if you’re OOS and compsci. Check to see if compsci admits directly into the compsci program or if you have to apply after you arrive on campus. It might make a difference to you. Good program.

Thanks. I read other posts which talk about how difficult it is and the scholar’s program as an alternative. It says on site that you do not apply directly to computer science.

I did see that but it is not like CMU where admission standards for computer science are much higher. I believe as long as you are admitted, you can start in computer science, right? I am not missing anything, am I?

how much higher could an admission standard be then your stats, OP?! UMD’s a state school, not MIT or CalTech or even CMU! You’re gonna be fine, I suspect. But waiting til January 30th or so to find out is going to be difficult for thousands of people.

Thanks. I understand that admission in the school (and computer science) should not be a problem. I was just trying to get an idea about honors. I am not sure I would go if it is not honors. UF (probably honors) is always a possibility but computer science is not highly ranked. It would be a lot less in state and they also give automatic scholarship based on GPA and scores. I prefer UMD, however. Thanks again for the feedback.

I am applying for business and would like to know my chances for honors:
580 CR, 760 M, 690 W
3.6 unweighted, 3.9 weighted
Several (not all) honors and two APs.
Do I have any chance?

Honors is not a sure thing for anyone these days, but zaryco, if I had to bet I’d bet you will be offered honors.
Emie, one of my kids had well over a 4.0 weighted GPA, 800s on2 SAT 2s and 36 on math ACT and he was not offered admission to honors but he was offered admission to scholars.
Good luck to you both.

hebajeba you have a good chance for acceptance but honor standards are increasing yearly. Nothing is written in stone but but a 3.9 UGPA and 1450 CR/M would be more realistic

ZARYCO, I was stumbling around the UMD forum to see just what it took to get into Honors for my D when I came across this page with some 2013 acceptances–some of which are Honors acceptances which mention their stats:

You can look at pages 9, 10, 11 or so and find mention of Honors stats. I hope this helps. I stand by my assessment of your qualifications for Honors–and my D’s for that matter.

My daughter is a freshman in the Honors College. It was a very eye opening experience. I thought she would be a shoe in for honors. She made it, but the resumes of some of her peers there are simply amazing. My daughter came in with about 35 credits. Some in honors have over 80! That is mind blowing to me. The point of this is that getting in honors has become extremely difficult. Her stats were : ranked 1/ 420, 4.0 uw/4.6 w gpa. 33 ACT, 12 AP courses including all the hard sciences and BC calc. She has friends with stats that were close to hers that were offered CP Scholars. They were ranked in the top 5% of the class and had taken 10 AP courses. Also there test scores were a little lower, not much, but a little. I would have thought they too would be offered Honors, but they weren’t. Good luck to all that applied!

Thanks jkeil911. Good luck to your daughter! Academically it’s a great fit. It’s a lot of work, but she was used to that from high school. She does get along with the other honors kids, but she doesn’t hang out with them. She is more social I think than many of them. There definitely is a social life outside of alcohol. There are so many clubs and groups. My d is in some groups but also enjoys going to the frat parties. She does study a lot. It’s not uncommon for her to be at McKeldin until 2 or 3 a.m. During finals last week she was there until 6 a.m. most nights.
