FYI, Maryland does not look at the writing score for the SAT - they only “count” the CR + M. Based on these initial scores, it kinda seems your son is more suited for the ACT…

Every year the stats for admitted students goes up, as do the stats for admission to the university. The way engineering admission works is you have to be admitted to the university first. If you are, only then does your application get considered for admission to engineering, which is a LEP (limited enrollment program). A lot of very talented students are admitted to the university but don’t get “direct” admission to engineering (they re-apply as “in-school transfers” after completing the required “gateway” courses).

The admission stats for freshman entering the fall of 2013 are posted as:
For students admitted to the University of Maryland for the Fall 2013 semester, the middle 50% of SAT scores ranged from 1260 to 1410, and 28-32 on the ACT. As a result 25% of the admitted students scored below a 1260 on the SAT and 25% scored above a 1410.

I don’t have the stats for the engineering students for fall 2013, but I do have them for fall 2012 when I attended the accepted students program last year…directly from Clark School of Engineering, the 2012 Freshman Class Profile Quality and Diversity was:
Applications - 5,000
Admitted - 1625
% women = 28%
% minority = 15%
SATs (critical reading/math)
-average SAT: 1381
-75th percentile SAT: 1460
-25th percential SAT: 1320
average HS GPA 4.2

Note that I expect these stats to be higher for Fall 2013 engineering admits…

The most critical thing you can do, once you get the test scores up, is to apply by the priority deadline of November 1st. It is NOT a commitment. It is NOT early decision. They don’t call it early action (probably because EA news comes out Dec 1st like ED news) and their decisions don’t come out til the very end of January. However, over 80% of the freshman class is selected from among those who apply by the priority deadline, which means that is your best chance of admission. In addition, applying priority allows you to be considered for special programs and merit scholarships. If you don’t apply priority, you are not eligible for merit, just financial aid.

Best of luck as you begin whole college process…

1) Maryland doesn’t care about writing school.
2) GPA is great and right now he would definitely get into UMD school. But he won’t get into EE directly. EE’s median SAT is quite high actually, just get that math score up to 700+, as close to 800 as possible. This shouldn’t be hard, especially since he’s interested in math.
