(In order of preference)
- MIT
- Harvey Mudd College
- Cornell (CALS)
- Johns Hopkins
- Carnegie Mellon
- Tufts
- Northwestern

I currently attend a top five LAC with strong grade deflation.

Physics and Computer Science Double Major
First Semester: 3.5
Will definitely show an upward trend for second semester.
Midterm Second Semester: 3.85
Major GPA: 3.9
ECs:
-Head of Sustainability club on campus
-Personal research project in designing and building wind belts which will be implemented by my college (received over $15,000 in funding)
-50+ hours volunteering with kids with special needs
-Part of 8 on-campus orgs

High School Stats:
SAT: 2250
Class rank: 4
GPA: 4.39/4 (UW)
ECs:
-National Merit Commended Scholar
- State Champion for High School Mock Trial (placed 10th at Nationals)

Additional "Hook":
-Dual Citizenship (grew up in Europe)
-During app process, wait listed at Northwestern, JHU, and Cornell
-GT at Cornell

Transferring Reasoning:
My school does not give engineering degrees and I absolutely am certain that I want to have career as an engineer (environmental engineer, specifically). I know these schools are all extremely selective for transferring but the thing is that I love my current college and I only want to transfer if it's for a school that is renowned for engineering.

P.S. I'll chance back!

not much chance for MIT. didn’t know jhu is good at e-school… cornell is possible. tufts and northwestern are fairly easy to get into.

I’d definitely say it depends on what MIT thinks about the research you conducted. I have a sibling at MIT, and he is positive that the research he did in HS is what got him in (partially because he won SIEMENS b/c of it).

Thank you for chance me! The reason I said MIT is maybe a little bit out of research is recently for the MIT transfer, they only admit students who have international gold medal on math physics or chem. At least for all the students I know, that’s the case. But if safetosay is right, maybe you will have a chance for MIT too. best of luck!

I wanted to ask - why did you not consider applying to Caltech?

As with above posters, I agree that it most likely will boil down to the quality of your research. Additionally, I did want to ask what courses have you taken first term, and what you are taking second term. The courses you’re taking probably will matter a great deal with regard to interpreting your GPA (e.g. if you’re taking multivariable calc or diffeq as a first term freshman and getting B’s, it’s likely a lot more impressive than getting B’s in linear algebra/proof-based calculus).

Your stats are very impressive! I think most of those schools are within reach, especially since your are coming from a top LAC. JHU is difficult for Sophomores to transfer into because it depends on two factors: available housing and freshman who transfer. Whereas for Junior transfers it only depends on available spaces. MIT is the biggest reach, I would say your shot at Cornell and Northwestern is good. Youre in a Tufts and Carnegie Mellon.

If it doesnt work out, wait a year and apply again. You should also consider Columbia University and Cooper Union

I hadn’t checked this thread in while but thank you guys so much for the replies!
@elizabeth: I didn’t apply to Caltech because I honestly didn’t believe I would get in (with such a low acceptance rate). I know MIT is even worse for that but I just applied for kicks and giggles, really. As far as courses, I did, in fact, did multivariable. I also took some humanities (liberal arts), physics, chemistry, and engineering. I tried to get a lot of science courses while still doing distributions.

@conncollege: thanks for the positive reply! I hope you’re right about Carnegie Mellon/tufts (: I just really want to transfer somewhere to do engineering!!
