Chance please

My daughter took the SAT's in January and got a 760 writing, 680 math, and 700 critical reading. She has 3 SAT II's so far - 700 English, 710 US History, and 700 Bio. She retook the SAT's yesterday and feels she did better on her math and reading than the previous test. Her GPA is 4.3 weighted, with all honors and AP's available at her school. Has never had less than an A- on her report card. Lots of ec's.

Do you think she could get in with those scores as is? Thanks!!!

***Update: She just got her new scores for the SAT and she got a 750 in Reading and a 710 in math. She went down in writing, but that is because she put all her effort into studying for the others. Plus, won't they super score her so she would end up with a 750 CR, 710 M, and 760 W. Any help would be appreciated!

My best bet (and this is coming from someone who has no admissions experience and didn’t attend a similar college) is that she has a chance, but she’ll be pushing it (of course, I’m mostly in the blind with regards to her ECs). A 2220 SAT (1460 old) is definitely something to be proud of, but note that she’ll be competing with people getting perfect or near-perfect scores on their SATs. According to Collegeboard’s site, she falls above average (for Princeton!) in Critical Reading and in Writing, but sits at the 25th percentile in math (with a 710… ridiculous, isn’t it?). Unless her field of choice is mathematically oriented, I don’t think it’s worth going through a second retake to bump her scores up further.

The SAT II’s are weaker, though. Using 2008 data from http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/sat_subject_tests_percentile_ranks_2008.pdf</a> (PDF warning), her overall (compared to all students taking the test) percentiles for Literature (what I presume you meant when you said English), US History, and Bio were 82, 80, and 83/70 (depending on which bio she took), respectively. All of these scores appear low for Princeton prospectives, which I think will hurt her application.

A 4.3 WGPA is fine. The fact that she has this despite taking APs and honors classes makes me think that the majority of her grades were A-, but that’s mostly speculation on my part. High schools vary drastically in how easily they assign grades, and I’m sure Princeton (and all other schools she should be at all worried about, at that) will take her high school’s difficulty into account when comparing her to 4.5 WGPA students from schools where the average is a 4.4.

In summary, if she thinks she can bump up her SAT Subject Test (SAT II) scores, I’d highly recommend she retake them. Beyond that, make sure she has the best application she can, and I wish you and your daughter the best of luck in the upcoming application season =).

naggingmama, are you Asian?

Not asian. White, low income.

My scores were all stronger and I got rejected. I don’t want to be discouraging, but there are hoards of students out there with better scores who are going to be rejected without a second glance. I’m not saying your daughter doesn’t have a chance but simply that shes in the same boat as a lot of very good students most of which will not get in. Apply anyway but don’t count on it
