Chance please?

MSU is the main school I want to go to, I'm going to be a senior in high school, so I still have one more semester to work on my GPA. I want to get some input on my chances. Thanks!

GPA- 3.1 (Kinda bad, I know)

ACT Composite-27
English-26
Math-31
Reading- 21 (Ouch)
Science- 30

I have not taking the SAT.

Top 20% in my class (Weird right?)

I have taken virtually all honors and AP's. AP's I have previously taken are AP World-3, Econ Macro-3, Econ Micro-3, and Chem-4.

I plan on taking AP Calc, Government, and Language.

My EU's are a bit poor. These would be what I would have by the time I graduate
Track and Field- 2 years
Marching band-2 years.
Quiz Bowl-1 year.
Science Olympiad- 1 year.

And I guess things that would also be good to know, I am a middle eastern male. In state.

Anyone that would chance me it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I didn’t take the ACT but I think it’s going to be a little tough. The ACT score is average while the GPA is low. Good luck though!

Thanks! Is their anything in particular that you would recommend I do just to possibly make my chances a bit better?Besides retaking the ACT and bringing up my GPA?

Try to get more extracurriculars: they’re the saving grace for those who are not as strong as others academically.

MSU does not care at all about extra-curriculars if you get a D. They could care less even if the same class is an AP class and you pass it with a 4.

^ I got into MSU with a D.

Hell, I got into U of M with a D.

A single D though. The OP’s GPA is too low overall.

I would focus on the GPA. It is on the low side but may be within reach. Showing improvement in GPA may help. It is possible they will give you a “wait and see” response.

Honestly? Going from experience, I think that you have a lower-than-average chance of getting into Michigan State. Is it possible? Definitely, but, were I you, I’d not let my hopes soar too high. A girl I used to (casually) date applied to MSU with a very similar academic profile; she was wait-listed and eventually accepted, even though several of my other friends were rejected, despite having higher ACT scores.

If you’re actually from the Middle-East and have any sorts of outstanding experiences, it might be worth incorporating them into your application-essay. Although I think he would have been fine anyway, one of my best friends just got into Michigan State as a transfer student - for his required writing, he told a few short stories about how growing up in Baghdad during the Iraq war shaped his outlook and has allowed him to have a greater perspective than he’d might have had growing up in other areas.

And, in case it matters, the girl I knew who was wait-listed and accepted is Pakistani, though I have no clue if she in any way tried to use that to her advantage.
