Out of state

I know I'm a really weak applicant, but do I have a chance? I'm generally a very good essay writer.
Thank you.

I think UW is a reach for you. They value GPA a lot.
2 people from my school had 2200+ SAT and 3.0 GPAs and got rejected.

I was actually reading an article that said alot of out of state students have a bit lower of GPAs than in-state due to attending schools that have little to no grade inflation. their SAT’s obviously, are a bit higher. however, sorry to tell you, but their GPAs are not that low. however, i would say you shoud still apply, because you could never know what happens.

^I find that hard to believe given that OOS admissions is more competitive.
Perhaps it is because applicants OOS go to more rigorous high schools? Even if OOS gpa is lower(which I think is apocryphal), it doesn’t mean it isn’t valued a lot. The applicant pool could just come from harder high schools, thus making the gpa lower.

With your current stats, going to have to say UW is a reach.

Out of curiosity, what happened junior year? Whatever the case, I hope it’s an experience that you grow from.

What SAT/ACT scores are you aiming for? How are you doing on practice tests for those?

The extra curricular activities also play a role in admissions - did you have any leadership positions? Can you talk about how your activities (Key club, NHS, Swimming) helped you grow as a person? You can write about 5 things … do you have anything else in mind for extra curricular activities?

If UW is more than just a “random school” that you aren’t that interested in, I’d still encourage you to apply since the personal statements do play a large part in the admissions process.

Nothing really horrible, I was just unprepared for the suddenly huge workload. I was about 1% away from A’s in 2 of my AP’s, but couldn’t push through and get it.

Do you know how much UW values 12th grade GPA? Maybe I could make up some ground.

I’m aiming for around a 2000 and a 30 on the SAT/ACT.

No leadership positions. I could talk about swimming, however, as it was such a huge part of my life. I’m not too sure what else to put for EC’s, I don’t really have any other strong ones.

I’m very interested in UW and it definitely isn’t some random school, and do plan on applying, but I just wanted a general sense of how my chances are.

Thanks for the reply.

During the admissions process, unfortunately UW doesn’t look at 12th grade GPA. However, they’ll ask you to fill in the classes that you plan on taking and then compare that to your final transcript if you are accepted and plan on attending.

Any ideas on what you might want to talk about in your personal statements? At this point you’ll probably be heavily relying on those to give a punch when the admissions group reviews your application. :)

Not even remotely. What are the topics I have to choose from?

They’re generally about diversity and/or how you overcome adversary.

Check out this page - [2012 Freshman Writing Section instructions | University of Washington](http://admit.washington.edu/Admission/Freshmen/WritingSection)

I could spin something for #2 about being the target of racism and learning to ignore others and be comfortable with myself. Something along those lines.

1 though, Jeez- that’s a tough one. I’m usually lost on things like this. I’ve never really had to really overcome any adversity serious enough to change me as a person. Or maybe I’m just underselling the significance of past events in my life.

I’m Asian, could I maybe talk about inflated and often impossibly large academic expectations for A?

If you can write it well that would be a decent topic.

and @JuanitaRebel- it is because they go to more rigorous high schools with less inflation. of course, it’s not extremely lower, more around the average from what I read. However, that means they should have higher than average SATs.

^ Okay, I understand where you are coming from.
