Chance Please?

Hi I am an African American male at a top 5 high school here in Georgia (Magnet). Like most people at my school, I have started thinking about what schools I should apply to once senior year rolls around. After browsing the forum I bit I figured that I'd give this chancing thing a go! If it helps I am planning on major in Comp Sci or Computer Engineering. I posted a chance thread before, but a BIG change has occurred and I'm curious to see what happens.

Schools as of now:

-UCLA
-Georgia Tech
-UMich

My only concern is that I have a suspension on my transcript for a drinking incident while on a trip. If I get it removed I'll probably report it anyway, but how badly will this hurt my applications? I'm also worried about being able to afford some of these schools. I've applied for a lot of scholarships, but am not finding any luck :(. Any advice? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

personally, if the suspension is reported, I think you should cross off UCB UCLA and UMich. You should still keep Georgiatech since you are in-state. You have a fair shot at the others if you bring your SAT up, but the suspension will still hurt.

Yeah I’ll be retaking the SAT in October since I know I can do a lot better. Thanks!

^ Actually I think your ACT score is quite fine, a 33. I’d reccomend just sending that score to colleges instead if you don’t feel like retaking it. A 33 is great score, and most colleges show no preference between an ACT and an SAT

I agree with @shawnspencer‌ … I did not see you ACT score. You have no need to retake the SAT, sorry!

That’d be great if my mother didn’t preemptively send my sat to some of the schools (not sure how she got into my account). Would they just overlook it?

They’ll see both, and usually use the higher score. The Common App requires reporting any suspension; some other applications (including those for large public universities) do not. It will not automatically disqualify you, but it might weaken your chances.

^ This may be true for schools that use other application methods or have their own application, schools like UMD or Tulane

I’ll look more into it once applications are released

Any other thoughts on chances or getting FA?

Cross California-Berkeley and California-LA off your list. The state financial crisis in California has had a huge detrimental impact on public universities. Unless you’re a potential full pay applicant, these schools will be out of reach for non-residents. Illinois and Texas-Austin will be similarly tremendously difficult to enter, let along secure any financial aid for.

Obviously you’re in the running for admission to GaTech, but with your stats, there are other solid engineering schools that might toss money your way, such as:

Iowa State (on par with Purdue)
Washington U (St. Louis)
Princeton U
Rice U
U Minnesota-Twin Cities
U Rochester
Northwestern U
Texas Christian U
Virginia Tech
Vanderbilt U

Look at the AITU schools, particularly the smaller ones. You would get a pretty good merit scholarship form many of them. As for your suspension, make sure that you discuss it briefly in your personal statement if only to demonstrate that you are cognizant of what you did and that you intend to not have it re-occur.

Would applying to a school like Princeton or Vandy be worth it though? I could consider them as reaches I guess, but do I have a decent chance of getting in?

You’re in purdue for sure. Like I’m pretty confident haha
Chance me?

UC-Berkeley - match
University of Illinois-UC - safety
Purdue University - safety
UT-Austin - Don’t know about it…
UCLA - match
Georgia Tech - match
UMich - match

I would send your ACT score only… You also have a chance at some ivies. I would throw on Cornell or something just for kicks.

I think you’re all set, TBH. You have really high ACT scores, and your SAT scores are around the same as mine. Your GPA is slightly low for the UCs though. I think you do have a good course load, lots of AP classes. Overall, you have a decent profile for the colleges you wanna apply to. Good luck!
