I am a white female from a suburb of New York applying Regular decision I.

GPA (unweighted): 3.26 (upward trend, bad freshmen year). All honors courses and a total of 4 APs.
ACT: 30
SAT: CR (640) W (730) M (680) combined 2050

ECs: Lots of community service, two summer jobs since freshmen year, captain of the varsity softball team, yearbook staff, school newspaper staff, took a college level course for credit last summer.
Good recommendations and essays.

Do you think I still have a shot, even with my low GPA?

I'd give you a 60% chance of getting in. Even though your GPA is well below the median of the current student body stats, your test scores are well above the median, and you've taken lots of advanced coursework. Your EC's are strong, and you've exhibited a strong work ethic. I don't know how many applicants Miami has this year from NY, but the admission staff strives each year for an incoming class representing as many different states as possible. Good luck!

About 15% of incoming freshmen had your GPA or lower, according to the collegeboard profile. I think it will depend upon how you explain things in your essays, and what your recs say. They will take you if you can justify the bad freshman year, or convince them that you have mended your ways, or if you are planning to play softball at school - or can offer them something else they need.

It's important to remember that the lower end of GPA at most colleges is usually a group of students who are bringing something else -- athletics, diversity, hardship. You need to convince them that you are bringing something else.

But as fminze says, your SATs are great. The college will be checking to see if you are a bright kid who is lazy, or if you had mitigating circumstances. If your GPA is low only because of a bad freshman year, and you got your act together and have been stellar the other 3, make sure you point that out. If something bad happened freshman year - illness, parents divorce, etc, point that out, too -- not as whining, but focus on how you got past it. Show them any strength that came of it. And if you can get a teacher or college counselor to mention how you have buckled down and turned things around, that will help. I think colleges in general penalize for a bad freshman year much less than later in HS. The rest of your application seems solid and you may well be exactly the kind of kid in that 15% who makes the cut.

Lol i am exactly the same as you. I have a 3.2 gpa and a 1410/2020 SAT and a 30 ACT. I will find out if I got in by monday, so If I get in you probably have a shot too.
