good extraciriculars! o.O scores a bit low but if everything else is amazing they know that scores aren't everything....if u applied to ED..wait and see...and if for RD...if u really love penn why not give it a try..many many ppl who get perfect scores don't get in and ppl who get lower scores got in cuz of their passion for penn and their major

How are you top 7% with a 3.86 GPA???

send act... crapshoot but glad to see a fellow republican... interested to see what happens

I don't see it happening, but you should apply nevertheless. Good luck!

how do u plan on fitting in all your extracirriculars?

if you are going to attach a brag sheet, MAKE SURE you emphasize your top few VERY WELL on the commonapp

I literally don't understand how people have SO MANY extracurriculars. Do they not take any time? Do classes not take time? But then I don't go to a "normal" school, so who knows...

I'm not into this whole chancing thing, because it's a total crapshoot, so I won't say either way. I just think it would be really funny for people who applied ED, after the decisions, to be like "Hey, I'm applying RD, will you chance me?" and then the 'chancers' will totally get schooled.

No APs taken and low SATs won't help too much..

well, i'm in sort of the same boat as you bro, maybe with a little better scores but yea.

i think you've got a shot, but my opinion doesn't mean much. even though your test scores are a bit low, that dual-enrollment thing looks fresh.

to scribs -- class does take time, and considering this kid is in the top seven percent, it proves he spends time doing homework. i think kids who manage to balance school and so many ECs are just passionate to get involved in everything. it's tough to be in the top of your class -- even if it's not at philips exeter; even if it's at a "normal school." and it's super tough to balance that with everything else -- "abnormal" kids at "normal" schools, eh.

i went to a poor urban magnet school. it was hot.

Your standardized test scores are weak, but the rest of your app is strong indeed.

Send only your ACTs, and hope for the best. Is it possible for you to retake either the SATs or ACTs before January? Consider it.

How are you top 7% with a 3.86 GPA???

[/quote]
are you surprised that it's too low or too high?

well im guessing his top 7% is based on weighted gpa.

lots of kids have 4.0uw in easy classes

No, I just mean like, at least at Exeter, it's literally impossible to do so many activities. Like, NO ONE at Exeter would have a list a third of that length. Because the activities take so much time. You usually have one club that you spend several hours on, and then maybe a few clubs that meet for just an hour or so a week. Like, it's possible to do student council and debate, but nothing else of consequence (and you'd have no free time, literally). Or newspaper and something else small. Like, my main activity is photography for our weekly school newspaper (and 500 page yearbook), and that takes anywhere from 8-15 hours per week, and then I'm in about five other clubs that meet maybe an hour each per week, mostly just "fun" ones (like Japan America Society) (and varsity cycling in the spring, which leaves you with no Wednesday or Saturday). And I literally have no free time. Free time equals Saturday night from 6pm, and then a few wasted hours on Sunday.

So when I see these long lists, they just don't make sense to me. I totally understand that "normal" (haha) schools are hard--friends at other schools taking a ridiculous number of APs or IB are being **** on. Just the EC thing...

So here's what happened... I had originally planned on sending Penn my SAT scores, then I took the test and didn't do well, yet Penn was already on my score recipient list (I didn't rush them)... Am I screwed for ED?

"are you surprised that it's too low or too high?"

Dude, I have a 3.94 uw (out of 4.0) and I'm not even in the top ten percent at my school.

well urmomgoestocollege thats you. i have a 3.81 and im rank 3. but i have a 5.02 weighted cuz i have a total of 13 aps :) take more aps less criticizing others

I have a 3.76 and I'm in the top 5% (weighted rank 13 out of 273). It just depends on whether your rank is determined by weighted or unweighted grades. On a side note, would Penn consider my rank and GPA as separate factors? or will they be taken together?
