Chance Please

Hi,

Can anyone provide me with a brutally honest chance out of 10? My counselor says 8.5 but I am not too convinced because it seems too good.

International Student-Indian

SAT I: CR 600 M 730 W 760 Total: 2090 (Second sitting)
SAT II: M2: 800 Phy:790 Chem:790
TOEFL: 112

School Grades: 9th-90% 10th-91% 11th-95% 12th (1st Term)-96%

Activities: Varsity Tennis and Badminton. Won medal in nationwide tournament in 9th and regional badminton competitions. Badminton team coach is an All England Badminton Champion. Three years of Community Service with the State Pollution Control Board. 45 day internship with a coal mining company's Software Development Group involving applications of GPS in mining etc.

Academic Achievements: Regional Physics Olympiad, Highest Scorer in French in State and a couple of school level achievements.

Recommendations: Counselor (Chemistry teacher), Maths and English teacher recommendations are quite well written and evaluations have my qualities as top 1% or top 5%. Other recommendations from the internship, the Pollution Control Board and Badminton Coach.

Essays: CommonApp essay is about the internship and CMU supplement essay is, in my opinion, very good.

Haven't applied for merit scholarship. I have sent supporting finance documents.

Since I have already applied and haven't received a notification from them regarding the submission of my application, I had called and they said that they have everything except my SAT II scores and the high school transcript. I took the SAT II in June 08 and the process date is around 14th November. The transcript and recommendations were delivered last week. I haven't received a single email from them. I don't even have the PIN with which the app status can be checked. Has this happened to anyone else?

I forgot to mention that my first choice is Carnegie Institute of Technology and second choice is School of Computer Science.

Does first choice/second choice make a difference? Or do all schools consider you equally?

As far as I know schools consider you separately, but since they ask for first and second choice they may never the less factor your interest in the particular school as well. I think they understand that your first choice school in December might not be the first choice in April.

Plaknas, have students from your school applied to Carnegie Mellon in the past? If they have your counselor may have better information than we do. For example, your grades seem low to us Americans, but it's my understanding there is much less grade inflation in Indian schools. Your math is on the low end of the middle 50% of the CIT class, and your CR score is low too. On the other hand, your writing score is really high. Still with a 30% overall acceptance rate, your GC's estimation seems optimistic to me, unless he knows something we don't know.

bump. I really need more answers.

To reply to the previous post, my GC has been working with students since quite some time for her to know that anyone with 2000+ on SAT I and decent grades (~85%) got through. I met someone with a 1980 on the SAT I who was selected for the SCS through ED this year and he had similar grades with pretty much nothing else. I am feeling confident but I don't want it over my head. Incidentally, is it possible to add an achievement? I sent an e-mail but I got a reply to one that I sent about 15 days ago. I wanted to call and check but they were having a hard time finding stuff and information through e-mail doesn't match online checking and what they told me when I called. For a school with such a reputed CS program, they really should be better at this stuff!!!!!

i basically agree with math mom, if your applying as an international your gonna have it rough for sure. I would think your SATs are kinda low, but i think good enough not to hurt you at all. I'd say 6.5-7
