Chance, please. :)

I'm a junior at a public high school with about 1300 students, so class size is ~350.

Gender: F
Nationality: White, but 1G immigrant

SAT: 2210
Writing: 750
Math: 780
Reading: 680
[possibly retaking]

I'm taking the SAT IIs in June - Math 1 (previously took - 700, aiming for a high 700), Math 2 (aiming for a high 700), and Bio (no idea how i'm gonna do, though i've been studying this whole last week so hopefully well).

College GPA: 4.35 (likely to rise at the end of this year because of APs)
I'm not sure if ^ that is UW, or W. Our school just calls it our "college GPA." The other one they give is is out of 5.0, and mine is 5.65 / 5.0.

Class Rank: About Top 1-2% ... they don't give us an actual number :( just a bar graph with where we stand. Lameee.

Sports:
-Diving (9-12) Varsity (10-12) --> made it to Sectionals this previous year, and hoping for States this upcoming year.
-Gymnastics (9-12) Varsity (9-12)
-Outdoor Track (11-12) JV

Extracurriculars:
-German Club (Co-Pres 11, 12)
-Education and Leadership for a Nonviolent Age (ELNA) (Co-Pres, 12)
-Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
-Earth Club
-Also, I do 2 diving club teams, so I do it year-round.

Other Activities:
-Model UN Conference (2009)
-ELNA Leadership Conference (2009)

Community Service and Jobs:
-CIT at a camp, 2 summers in a row (about 180 hours)
-Relay For Life (24 hours)
-Math Tutoring (20 hours)
-Chem Tutoring (3 hours, it was to prepare someone for a test)
-ELNA Family Feud Night (we raised $2000 for Angels of Hope - Uganda)
-ELNA Concert for Haiti (we raised money (not sure how much yet) for Haiti)
-Babysitting, like everyone else in this world...haha =P

Awards:
-National Honor Society (11,12)
-High Honor Roll (every term so far)
-National German Exam Finalist (scored over 90% each time I've taken it)
-National Merit Scholarship - Commended Student
-Class night for the 2010ers this week, but a few of us juniors get book awards - can't wait to see which one I get

Summer Stuff:
-CIT at a camp
-possibly doing a diving camp this summer, not sure yet though.
-Internship at a nanotech lab affiliated with a hospital.

Courseload:
I've always taken the highest course available in every subject, and usually get in the A range of grades, with the occasional B+ (but rarely!)

Junior Year:
AP Calc BC
AP US History
Honors German 3
Honors English
Honors Biology
Normal Spanish 4 (long story: no Spanish course - 5th year, 4th year, OR AP - fit into my schedule except normal level Spanish 4. I wanted to take Spanish regardless because I really do enjoy learning languages. My counselor will explain this in my rec, she said).

So, I'm applying to a LOT of schools.
Stanford is my top top top.
Brown
Columbia
Cornell
Dartmouth
Duke
Georgetown
Johns Hopkins
MIT *
McGill
NYU
Princeton
Rice *
Stanford * (applying Restrictive Early Action)
UC - Berkeley
UPenn
USC
UCSD
Yale
Wash U - St Louis

Also, I'm having trouble finding safeties that I would actually want to go to. I'm thinking like a school with 3000-7000 students, close to, if not in, a big city, etc. Any ideas? I'm going pre-med and also hoping to ultimately do some nanotech research in my future, so bio med engineering?

Hooks: First generation immigrant (English is my second, technically third, language), diver (NOT scuba, springboard) (we're rare!)

I don't want to say what specific state, but from the general New England area...East coast.

Your stats are really good, but keep in mind that a lot of these schools are Ivy’s which can be SO unpredictable. Our valedictorian didn’t get into Stanford (he’s going to Rice on a half scholarship) but they took our #3 and #5. Someone else in our class with a rank in the teens got into Duke on a full scholarship. o.O And then someone else with a rank in the 20’s got into Johns Hopkins on a full scholarship as well. I’m not entirely sure what all those top schools look for but it’s not only rank and GPA. Your EC’s are great which puts you in good standing. Really, all I can say is good luck! But you definitely have a chance for all those schools on your list!

phew thanks! that makes me feel so much better.

The Ivies and Stanford are a reach for everyone even with perfect stats. Otherwise I’d say you would likely be admitted to the rest of the schools you list.

Yeah, I know they’re difficult, but I’m hoping for at least one Ivy! And I just got the Columbia Book Award!..if that helps!

Regardless of your chances, twenty schools is too many, especially without a few safeties thrown in.
I know it’s really difficult to narrow it down, but you need to try, or you’ll wind up like my friend who applied to 24 schools, doing application at midnight on December 31st. He got a lot of waitlists.

Perhaps consider this: all of the Ivies are extremely different. I hated Princeton and I love Yale. I was in love with Dartmouth when applying and expected it to be a perfect fit; it wasn’t. Columbia has a core curriculum and Brown has almost the exact opposite (oddly I applied to both; curriculum was not a deciding factor for me, although it probably should have been taken into consideration). I would have been miserable at Cornell or Penn.

I didn’t have the luxury of visiting schools before I applied, and I don’t know if you do either, but you have to find some way to narrow your choices.

Yeah chances are I’m not going to visit any schools either. And if it helps, I’m trying to get ahead on essay writing and everything. But I know what you mean, I’m considering taking a few off, but I just can’t seem to get it down too much. Though, don’t worry, I definitely will!

I forgot to add that I am 15yo-16yo in junior year since I skipped kindergarten. I know the fact that I skipped that isn’t impressive but I think the fact that I’m younger by my grade shows something?

And also, bump :)

Do you love McGill? That is the only school on this list I think you can count on. Maybe UCSD depending on major, but can you afford the $50K plus OOS tuition it will cost for probably 5 years? Please, please add some schools you like that are not such big reaches, especially given the under 700Cr whuch will make any ivy very tough for a kid from the NE. Being young is not a plus.

Well no offense but I really don’t think the SAT is going to break it for me. Sure it may not be as strong as other applicants, but it is definitely strong. English isn’t even my first language - it’s my third…And I’m going to prepare for CR this summer and retake it in the fall, and also take the ACT. My GPA is 4.35 / 4.0 , and I have good EC’s, community service and sports, so I don’t see why I shouldn’t apply. I’m aware that they’re reaches. Now, I’m not saying I am expecting to get into all of them, but I am hoping for at least one or two. I have seen plenty of threads where someone has gotten into Ivies with lower scores than mine. If I write some good essays, I think I have a shot. I’m aware that I can’t “count on” all of these schools, but I wouldn’t say there’s not a good chance for a few. I think I have a good chance at Wash U, JHU, Rice, NYU, and USC. Rice is especially looking for people from New England, actually. Also, Cornell and MIT LOVE people from my high school. This year, we have 2 going to MIT and 5 got accepted into Cornell and 3 are going. We have students go there almost every year. And yeah I’m able to afford it, but why would it take 5 years?

PS We kind of found out our rank the other day because of an awards ceremony…I’m #3 / 350 +

Here’s a chart I often share with students and parents:

[Brown Admission: Facts & Figures](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)

It’s for Brown but gives a very good indication for mid level ivies and other top schools. HYPSM would look more bleak. Brown accepts less than 8.8% of applicants with your CR score. This includes the many recruited athletes, the almost 20% URMs, the 12% legacies and the kids from North Dakota and Alaska. A white or Asian kid from the NE with that score would need something highly unusual to make the cut.

thanks soze! Wash U always sends me things, and in fact that’s how I found out about them. They sent me a paper copy of their supplement and said to hand it in ASAP, so I submitted it online :)

And yes, Redroses, but my math is a 780 and my writing is a 750, and a large percentage of the class is accepted from there. Plus, I am probably going to major in Math or Biology, minor in Biomed Engineering, and focus on medicine, but that’s further in the future. My strong points are in math and science. Though I do try my hardest in English and History, as exhibited by my solid A / A+ average in APUSH this year. Also, I’m taking AP English next year, which at my school you need to do a diagnostic writing and need to be accepted into the AP English program. I think that shows that I do try to work on my weaknesses.

I don’t think you understand the admissions process well. I hope you will add safer schools. I do wish you luck!

bumperoooo

bump

I forgot to add that I’m gonna be submitting a recruit video for diving with my apps / to coaches =] so i’m hoping that will help. how will that affect my chances?

also for the SATIIs I got
Math 2: 780
Math 1: 700 (again, ■■■)
Bio-M: 620 (long story short - my teacher this year was awful, and to top that it wasn’t an AP, just honors since AP Bio is only offered to seniors. I wanna take the ACTs to redeem myself in the science area).

@Redroses: I just got acceptances! I wanted to let you know that I got into:
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
Rice
USC
BC (honors program)
NYU
McGill
and
CORNELL.

I also got waitlisted at UPenn, Georgetown, and WUSTL.

Before, you said you don’t think I “understand the college admissions process well,” but I’d like to think that I apparently did something right! I think I’m probably gonna go to Rice (one of my original top choices), Cornell, UCLA, or McGill! (but at this point I’m hopeless when it comes to deciding).

Good luck to anyone applying this upcoming year!
