So I already posted a thread a few months back but I just got my ACT scores back and got my junior year grades and senior schedule

Senior Schedule:

AP Senior English
AP Environmental Science

Taking english class at community college

I haven’t taken AP Chemistry or physics but I have taken honors chem and regular physics. Also I have taken spanish up to the 4th year if that helps my chances.

Last question, should I retake my ACT? I got a 31 composite but did horribly on the reading and got a 26. Is that worth retaking?

Looks good to me! Is this your first ACT score? Never hurts to take two or three times. But, a composite of 31 is fine, especially with your high GPA. It will be higher after Cal Poly does their configuration. My daughter had an ACT of 30. She also had less AP classes (mostly because they didn’t work with her schedule.) So, you’re looking very good!

Study up on your English and whatever else you think needs improvement and take the ACT again. But, 31 is still great. With my daughter, her composite went up two points the second time (from 28 to 30), but her English went from 34 to 31. However her reading was 33. It all worked out in the end! :)

Best wishes to you and keep up your grades as a Senior!

Jake, Your stats are in the range for EE based on what I saw this year. I would definately retake the ACT if you can boost it up. My daughter had 1400 SAT and 33 on the ACT. She is not an engineering major but I noted many EE types had similar, or higher scores. Your GPA is good. Also, make sure you review the CSU core class curriculum list and have a lot of those core classes in your senior year schedule. The number of core classes (math and science in particular) that you take THROUGH YOUR SENIOR YEAR are a significant factor in admissions (in addition to GPA and test scores).

Good luck. My daughter is also from Washington and starts at Cal Poly in the fall.

I think you have a strong chance of getting in to CP. CP loves the ACT and a score of 31 is very good. If you are concerned about your reading score, just try again. You may end up with a similar score. My son took it twice and got the same score both times. (35)

You are taking a very rigorous senior schedule and have already taken a tough load as a junior and have done well. I think you may be over doing things, but hopefully you know what you can manage. senior year is a lot of fun, but stressfull and busy.

You should have no problem getting into good colleges with your grades and activities.
Cal Poly is an awesome choice!

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the responses.

That was my first time taking the ACT and I’m still undecided on whether I want to retake it or not because I’m satisfied with all my scores except reading.

What have you got to lose but the fee? Even though your composite score is fine, it wouldn’t hurt to increase your English score. On the other hand, I think Cal Poly is more interested in the composite. I’m not sure if they super score. (Add the highest numbers of each test score together). I would think if you were an English major it would be more important to have a high score in that area. I don’t know. Either way, they take the highest composite score. If you’re worried about the second exam score going down, just don’t have it automatically sent in. You’re not obligated to send all your scores in. Just let them see the highest if you want.

My son applied as an aerospace engineering major. He had a 4.0 unweighted, 4.22 weighted, composite ACT of 31 with Math in the ACT a 35. He was waitlisted and eventually not offered admission this year. So, hard to say even though your stats look excellent. He was admitted to UCLA though with those scores. Chose to go somewhere else for this fall though.

quick question, would being an oos applicant help or hurt my chances?

From everything I have gathered over the past year for my OOS daughter, OOS status has no impact on the admission decision. It does have an impact on financail aid, or course, due to the higher OOS tuition.

I think you have a good chance. I made it into BMED with a 3.75 weighted and far fewer AP courses. Then again, that year they “admitted too many” and it seems that admission has gotten tougher. I’d think in-state applicants are given priority over OOS, but I could be totally wrong. It’s certainly pricier to attend as an OOS (or for that matter, anywhere away from home). Go for EE if you want a strong 4-year degree.

wow… people are really smart these days.
