sceinhorn… I just posted on another ‘chance me’ thread to address some of the criteria that we as admissions counselors at the University of Rochester consider when evaluating applications. Feel free to check it out, and please let me know if you have any questions.

just read that post you were talking about and thanks for that info. very interesting and i think (and hope) that I meet most of that criteria.

For me, I put a lot of hours into each of my jobs, score keeping and caddying. For Caddying, i mean two summers (like 16 total weeks) 30-40 hours per week about. For something like community service though, I put hardly anything. Does 500-600 hours of work look as good as community service. DO colleges care where you spend your time as long as you spend it actively?

hey, im a freshman at U of R and so i know how you probably feel with the whole application process! youre resume seems to fit the criteria. SAT IIs are strongly recommended, i feel you shouldget some more leadership or extra curriculars under your belt though

Hey… I would venture to bet that most colleges aren’t too concerned with the exact details of your extracurricular/volunteer activities (i.e. hours logged, position title, etc.). Experienced Admissions Counselors are typically quick to differentiate between activities that are of genuine importance to you, and those that are undertaken as a means to bolster your resume for a college/job application. Personally, I want to see a student that is involved, and involved for the right reasons. Sometimes a student is working 15-20 hours a week to save up for college and doesn’t have time for athletics, while another student is a three-sport athlete and captain of the basketball team - both students are spending their time in useful and meaningful ways. Bottom line - do you what you love and what your schedule/needs permit you to do. There is no reason to go out and do 500-600 hours of community service if community service is not something you feel very strongly about.
