I am going to be a senior this year and I'm really interested Cornell. Please chance me for both ED and RD, if you can.

However, by no stretch of the imagination am I the strongest candidate, but I do not fully understand what my chances are and need some guidance.

SUmmer experience
I just attended Amherst College for 2 weeks for the Great Books SUmmer Program

My essay's will be strong as well. I know that I am not that strong, but please tell me whereabout I stand.

BE HONEST

Which school are you applying to?

At the moment, I want to major in economics so am I correct in thinking that would the college of arts and sciences?

Yeah, that would be CAS. Though it’s hard to say without knowing any more leadership positions in your ECs (I would say at least like 2-3?). ACTs are at a fine level, but many apps often have like 33-34+ (you’re fine though).
30 hours? That’s puny. Try getting at least 300-400 hours. GPA’s pretty weak as well… 3.8 is better.
Though I hear admission into individual schools and majors are based on your interests and stuff. So I’d attempt to win some FBLA competitions (or just have leadership in this club in particular).

The app itself is in need of a strong essay to tie it all together. With it, I’d say a mid-high reach.

Just wondering, how does the ED admissions board consider senior year grades? Do they consider the progress report/quarter report? I’m in a similar situation as OP.

^bump, i’d also like to know this.

Well, not sure if they do, but I’d think that they do take a look at senior grades. Still, you could use that one or 2 marking period(s) and try getting your GPA up by w/e it is.
If you went from 95’s in Jr year to like 80s and 70s in the senior semester, then I’d think it’d pose an issue.

yeah, i know that it is a good thing to keep up senior grades. but my question is, do they look at senior grades (progress report only, since they decide to accept/reject you before the end of the first semester) WHEN making the actual decisions?

Well I read in a another forum (which I exed out randomly… at **************) that they do not look at Senior year grades if applying ED (obviously). But they do when doing RD, and some waitlistees are required to send in mid year grades senior year.

Of course, though, one doesn’t want to start tanking senior year. Midyear reports are supposed to be submitted around February…

For me, I put a lot of hours into each of my jobs, score keeping and caddying. For Caddying, i mean two summers (like 16 total weeks) 30-40 hours per week about. For something like community service though, I put hardly anything. Does 500-600 hours of work look as good as community service. DO colleges care where you spend your time as long as you spend it actively?

If your essays are to be good, don’t put apostrophes where they are not needed… OP “essay’s”. I found this a little ironic.

Senior schedule, rather than grades will be looked at for ED. Since ED applications are due 11/1 & states such as NY haven’t even completed their first 10 weeks yet, they can’t really get grades on all applicants. They will look at schedule to measure your “rigor” of class difficulty.

“we do definitely count your senior year courses and mid-point grades as part of the application” -a Cornell admissions officer, I hope she doesn’t mind me quoting her ^^;;

And sceinhorn, I’m pretty sure work hours is a suitable replacement for community service hours, though having community service that fits your academic interests could be better (that second part is my speculation).

I also thought that Senior year grade were not looked for ED until my college counselor told me that they look at 1st marking period grades.

The only thing that concerns me is your GPA. My cousin got in your GPA, but she did get a 35 on her ACT and a 780 on the literaure subject test, 760 biology, and an 800 German. I don’t know, I’d say 40 percent.
