Some people think the earth is flat and that doesn’t make them correct or knowledgeable.
Schools that require the CSS Profile have their own methodologies for determining what your demonstrated need is. Some consider home equity and others do not, for example. Saying the school meets 100% demonstrated need does not mean you can tell them you want to pay less.
You didn’t fill out the NOC that quickly. They will, depending on the school and each is different, look at your home equity, retirement assets. They meet need means what they see as your need. Not what you say. As I said you need to stay far away from ED until you do a serious deep dive.
Colleges don’t negotiate in general.
You may get to a situation where it’s possible one will match another but you do not assume that going in.
It isn’t flat ?? My new crazy school board members told me it was !! And other ideas from the dark ages !!
Note to me. Call my daughter’s school. The full tuition scholarship she has isn’t enough. Why should I pay for room and board? I’ll tell them to adjust it for me. I never knew I could tell them my need.
Note to OP. I’m sure you are very bright but you are also a bit delusional. Each college you mentioned, including the three safeties, is inundated with zillions of kids that likely have academic records superior to yours. They have no issues filling seats.
I’m sure you are great but you need them more than they need you so you are not going to negotiate the benefit of your presence on their campus. Sorry.
Alright. I’ll look more into ED. How do you suppose my EC’s are in terms of competitiveness? feel as though my unweighted GPA seems far lower than what my weighted GPA suggests and I don’t exactly know if 7 AP’s is a lot or a little. Our school just doesn’t offer APs earlier so it’s hard to get a lot in.
Alright. I don’t know why you are so against the idea of ED’ing but I understand the sentiment of how it may cost more. And we filled out the NOC a while back!
Schools meet need as they calculate it, and each school calculates it differently. Run the NPCs…if they aren’t affordable DO NOT APPLY ED. There is no ‘negotiation’ unless there are special circumstances, such as a job loss. Note that NPCs may not be accurate if your parents are divorced, own a business and/or own real estate beyond a primary home…are any of those the case for your situation?
If they don’t offer them that’s a plus. If you took 7 of 7 offered, that’s great.
Schools want to see 2-3 ECs that you dive headfirst into…not a long list.
You need to focus your attention on preparing your best app, not worried about changing things.
Again because you have 3 safeties you can do as you want but I can tell you are taking a huge risk with ED. You don’t want the oh crap, I can’t afford it, how do I get out of it scenario. Apply RD
I see. So looking at my ECs, does it seem more like a long list of things or is it obviously that there is a clear interest (philosophy and premed). I’m hoping these ECs are good enough because I’m confident in saying that
And yeah we can max take 3 AP’s junior year and you can take 4 but you would need to drop an elective (mine was honors choir and I didn’t want to). Max you can take senior year is 5 and I am taking 4 but self studying one
Ah I see. And yeah I don’t have divorced parents but I do know we tried our best to full out all information regarding our assets and what not. I’m definitely going to take your consideration but I’m also looking at the NPC and judging whether or not it is best for me (and it truly is, because of our estimated contribution and because ED gives me a better chance at a college I would love to go to). But I’ll definitely take into consideration what you said; you don’t have to consider it “beating a dead horse”
Call Williams aid office. Set a zoom appointment or have your parents do so. And have them help you fill out the NPC. if it matches and they are willing to pay, then go for it
You need to be super sure or you’ll be paying $80k a year.
I’m personally not a fan of ED. I let neither kid apply that way. It’s a gimmick for the school to lock you in, not for you.
FYI: Med school is around $60-80K per year, depending on the program.
My daughter’s roommates were all on loans.
There is no significant “merit” aid for Medical schools.
Everything costs big dollars. Plus, most of my daughter’s classmates took a year off, after undergrad, to study and to get in their volunteer hours. We paid her rent for a year near her university.
You need to make really sure that you understand the finances before you sign up for any school.
Demonstrated need is what the school believes you should pay. It’s not a given that you’ll be covered for all of your expenses.
Edited to add: ED is a really bad idea if you believe that they want to negotiate because they “really” want you. They want your “dollars”. If you can’t afford it, no amount of begging is going to change your savings.
