chance/question for GT

<p>Hey. I'm new to this board and I'm not sure if this should technically be posted in the "What Are My Chances" forum, but I'd like specific feedback for GT; I'm going to apply there with EA and I plan on doing some sort of engineering (I've been looking at chemical and mechanical). I'll post a general topic with all my colleges in that forum, so I hope I don't get castigated on my first post for spamming.</p>

Senior graduating 2011
Florida... do OOS students get treated any differently in the application process?
White Male
Public School (top 4% of nation is the most recent thing I've heard of my school's value)</p>

<p>GPA: 3.9 (UW)/ 4.66 W
I have an obvious upward trend in grades, ending with all As junior year.
I'll calculate my GT GPA later. It says foreign language (2 units), but would a 3rd year of foreign language be included in the calculation?</p>

<p>EC's: this is through junior year, but the honor societies include senior year because I know I'll be in those.</p>

Worked on Zybez for 2 years guaranteeing the quality of everything put onto the website, which showed me how to go about editing websites in HTML and whatnot.

<p>Senior Plan:
AP Biology, AP Physics B, AP Calculus AB, Intro to Engineering Design, Chinese II, AP English Literature, AP Government/Economics Hon, AP Computer Science A (online)
I plan on doing a lot of math/science ECs. </p>

<p>Other stuff:
If I can, I'll send in an AutoCAD design I made during my internship for the company so that the contractors didn't hit the pipes for my city's wastewater treatment plant. I assume it worked since I haven't heard of a catastrophic event at the plant, haha.<br>
I visited GT and took a campus tour and attended an engineering information presentation. And I'm going to do EA.<br>
My teacher recommendations will be from a physics teacher and an English teacher. Once again, if I can, I'll submit a letter from the P.Engineer who I spent my internship with.
I'm going to write about my engineering internship experience. Any opinions, tips, whatever on that?</p>

<p>you should get in early action, but dont bother sending any recomendation letters Tech does not look at them. Could you take Physics C? Tech does not give credit for B and you would be out of a weed out class if you took the C exam.</p>

<p>You do NOT need techer recommendations for georgia tech. Btw they do NOT use the common application system in case you don’t know that yet.</p>

<p>The problem is, ilyssa, my school only offers Physics B. Does Physics C cover what is in Physics B, or is it slightly different?
And thanks for telling me that, ctoncton. I was previously under the impression that most, if not all, college applications required recommendation letters.</p>

<p>Physics C is a harder class geared more towards math/science/engineering majors. It covers a few extra topics beyond Physics C, and also integrates some basic calculus (derivatives/integrals/limits). There’s also two types of Physics C exams you can take: Mechanics and/or Electricity and Magnetism. Each is approximately 1 1/2 hours long, and you can take either or both in the same year, unlike the Calculus AB/BC exam.</p>

<p>…In my experience (I took the Mechanics exam just this May), in comparison to other AP exams, I would definitely have a good grounding in how to solve problems. There’s only 3 free response problems for each exam, so you have a larger possibility of making a lower score if you’re not careful because the free response questions are still worth 50% of the score, even though there’s only 3 of them.</p>

<p>The main reason I posted this was to get comments on how I would do in the admissions, though; so if whoever may post can focus on that, that would be perfect and much appreciated.</p>

<p>Yeah you are likely in Early Action IMO but definitely Regular if it gets to that point. As for the whole 3rd year Foreign Language so you can calculate your GT GPA, I do believe the extra year would count. I only say that because courses like AP Computer Science would not fit in the “requirements” but these classes are officially being worked into your GT GPA now so yes, do add in the 3rd year of foreign language to your GT GPA.</p>

<p>Wow, I never knew how the physics exams worked. I thought that B was the mechanics stuff and C was all E and M, but I’d imagine that the C is indicative of the calculus involved. Is it true that classical physics/mechanics at Georgia Tech is harder than E and M. I was told this by some students in E and M that this was the case. I found the admission kind of shocking given how much harder E and M is than Mechanics here.</p>

<p>^ I think that is true because a lot of people go into Tech have not had a physics class. Especially people is the more rural areas of georgia. My boyfriend had someone ask him what was a force last year when he was giving ppl physics help .sigh</p>

<p>^That’s exactly what there are. Also, maybe somebody can answer this question for me. In the info I’m posting below, it says high school GPAs was 3.67-4.04 (mid 50). I assume that’s Tech weighted b/c people are over 4?

<p>The 3.67-4.04 figure represents the average GPA as calculated by Tech. This means that only academic classes were counted and that AP/IB classes received a .5 added weight. Honors classes are not weighted.</p>

Obviously with the amount of applicants for the 2010 Fall term, the numbers have probably gone up, but if I can A my science/math courses (which I think is definitely do-able with my past performance in Math/Science) and B my english course, I would have a 3.68 along with my 32 ACT. I think I’d have a solid shot at regular.</p>
