im interesting in applying for 2008,

I have about a 89 GPA with a 1300 SAT. With good EC's.

How much of a factor of my dad being an alumni play? I know im not one of the smartest applicants but does that help me a little bit?

should i go ED?

-thanxs in advance, AV

If you are sure Lafayette is the place for you, ED might help. But don't do ED unless you're sure.

My hubby and I are both alum, but we laugh that our son wasn't admitted BECAUSE of us - he was admitted IN SPITE OF us! just kidding. Lafayette does value alum ties but you have to fit the profile to begin with. Jason (Candyman) could give you a better idea on your chances, but keep in mind that Lafayette's admit rate this year was around 30%. :-(

MAStFROWW,

Admissions officers say that they look for applicants with GPAs in the A-/B+ range. Keep in mind, however, that GPA is considered along with the difficulty of your courseload. Did you take those Honors/AP courses?

A 1,300 SAT is just fine...it places you square in the running. Admissions officers say that the median SAT range for admitted students is 1240-1420.

Legacy applicants (those with alum parents) are given a slight advantage in the admissions process. How involved is your dad in college affairs? Does he maintain a strong tie with Lafayette? Keep in mind that many applicants have that legacy status, and every legacy cannot be admitted. Let's put it this way...your dad having graduated from Lafayette will definitely not hurt you!

I totally agree with Lafalum84. Only apply ED if you really want to attend Lafayette. Do not abuse the privilege just to play the "ED Game" (knowing that ED applicants are admitted at twice the rate of RD applicants). I really cannot help you here..after all, only YOU know whether ED is the right decision.

All the best,

Alrighty thanks,

Another thing is how important are the SAT II's. I know it says that they help to figure out placement, but what does that mean.

-AV

AV,

According to the "Admissions" portion of the Lafayette website:

<<< The results of SAT Subject Tests are recommended, but not required for admission. Some academic departments will use scores from these tests for placement purposes. >>>

This means that students who obtain certain scores on certain exams can earn college credit and place out of some of our Common Course of Study requirements. For instance, a 600+ on any of the foreign language SAT II's fulfills our Foreign Culture Requirement.

Supposedly, the Subject Tests are not used during the evaluation of applications. However, I highly doubt that a student who submits above-average SAT II scores (650+) would not be given some sort of advantage in the admissions process. After all, those scores do show up on the SAT Score Report and would be hard to ignore.
