Chance?/Quick Question

I'll lead with my question, and it might be totally stupid. Is it more difficult to get in if you apply close to/on the application deadline?

Okay, so now my stats.
GPA: 3.78 UW (not including Senior year, 4.0 Junior and Senior years)
SAT: 2350 (800W 750M 800CR)
SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Physics
AP: 5's in AP Comp Sci and AP Physics B, taking five more AP's senior year
Essays: Good, very well-written and not cliched, but might not really stand out
Recs: Probably great
Awards: Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award (11), NMSF
ECs: Multi-instrumentalist (4 different instruments) and composer for school's Jazz Band and Select Jazz Band. Tenor in High School Choir and a capella octet. Prominent (but definitely not starring) roles in school musicals and drama. Varsity bowler. JV track for my first two years of High School. Ski club.
Volunteer: Local comfort care home.
Other stuff: I've self-released two albums of original music. I program games (I've taken two week-long summer programs, at Swarthmore and MIT) and have taught a class on game creation to Middle School students. I write the film column for my school magazine, The Harley Acorn. The "additional information" section on the common app contains a link to a page which links to an album of original piano music, one of my film review columns, and a game I programmed, although I know the committee probably won't have time to go through this stuff thoroughly.

Sorry if this is more info than I'm meant to give for this sort of thing... I'm new to the site. I'm applying to major in Computer Science. I've been considering the school a "match" so far, but recently I've just started getting really worried and anxious. Do I have a good shot? Financial aid isn't a big issue, but it would definitely be nice. Thanks in advance!

Dude, slap yourself for being so blatantly ■■■■■■■■ as to question your credentials. You are a high up match my friend. I would kill for your stats!

I’m sorry, I’ve just been suffering a ridiculous amount of anxiety recently over the college app process, and doubt has been taking me over completely. Seeing that actually takes such a huge weight off of my mind, you have no idea. So… Thank you!

Aaaaand waitlisted. Guess I wasn’t so qualified after all. :/

Oh no! Where did you apply? Your stats are seriously amazing, though. I can’t imagine you were waitlisted.

Jk, I just realized this was in the UMichigan - Ann Arbor thread. awkward Where ELSE did you apply, though?

I applied to quite a few places. Admissions did not go the way I wanted them to.

Accepted - Case Western with a Michelson-Morely Scholarship (I’ll probably go here), Northeastern Honors w/ Dean’s Scholarship

Waitlisted - WUSTL, Carnegie Mellon SCS, Northwestern, UMich AA

Rejected - MIT, Stanford, Harvey Mudd

I guess my GPA just wasn’t competitive enough this year, or else I wrote mediocre essays (I didn’t get any outside help, so that may have hurt me). In any event, I guess most admissions folks just weren’t impressed enough. I’ll do my best to stand out at Case Western (I made no effort to do so in HS) and maybe I’ll apply as a transfer to UMich, Berkeley (I missed the app deadline this year), or Cornell in a year or two. I’m still pretty disappointed, but I’m coming to terms with everything, and I’m seriously looking forward to attending Case Western’s admitted students weekend.

Seriously? With your amazing XCs and other extra stuff, I’m really surprised that you were rejected by MIT, Stanford and waitlisted by those other great colleges. Like you said, it might be the essays, because your GPA isn’t terrible, and your other stuff more than makes up for it. All I can say is good luck at Case Western, and I hope you enjoy it! :)

Also, if you don’t mind, would you PM me your Common App essay? I’m curious to see just what about it could have caused those colleges to reject you - and maybe it’ll help me with my college admissions in a few months!
