based on just this info and not taking ecs into account, what are my chances?
SAT: 600CR 630M 550W will redo if I get 28 or lower of ACT
GPA UW: 3.2 (got a 4.0 junior year)
GPA Weighted: School doesn't do weighted GPAs or ranks
Next year classes are: AP Bio, AP English language and Composition, AP Chem, COLLEGE NOW precalc and trig, Modern American and World Issues, and Law and American Society
This summer I'm interning at a marketing company and I'm taking a course at a local CC thats a continuation of AP US Gov
I currently live in Oregon (born and raised in Arlington, VA) and I'm planning on majoring in International Studies or Political Science (or something in the same ball park as the two). I'm also looking at finance and international business

UMich- Ann Arbor (seriously doubt I'll get in, but I'm not paying for applications!)
Occidental College- mom and uncle graduated from there and aunt went for a year or two
Syracuse
Northeastern
American University
Babson College
U Wisconsin- Madison (same as UMich I'm guessing)
Quinnipiac
Robert Morris
Boston U (maybe)

Colleges will like seeing the improvement, so don’t worry too much about the GPA as long as it is 3.8-4.0 next year as well.

I would improve the SAT scores a bit more, or try to get the ACT to 30-31. What are AP test grades for any AP tests you have taken?

On an off note, what high school do you go to/where are you in Oregon? I live there too, and was curious.

Here’s a thought:
Try applying to Michigan State’s James Madison program. It is a pretty good international relations/international studies program, and it is easier to get into that UMich. It would probably be a high match/low reach for you, but I honestly think that it would be a good place to apply to.
What are your ECs?

Thanks for the feedback guys. nukchebi0 I live in Eugene, how about you?? I won’t tell you what hs I go to because of confidentiality reasons. smart.cookie thanks for letting me know about MSU’s James Madison College, I’ll definitely check it out.

No problem.
Here’s the website: [James Madison College](http://www.jmc.msu.edu/)

GiggitusMaximus, James Madison is also very intimate – as a residential college where classrooms, faculty offices and dorm rooms are in 1 building – and intense: 2% of MSU’s population and over 30% of the University’s Phi Beta Kappa grads, fyi.

My sister toured James Madison and loved it. You have the option of going to just James Madison, or attending both James Madison and the honors college (if admitted to both). Also, there is special James Madison dorms. All in all it is an excellent program for International Relations/prelaw.

Wow it sounds great! It also seems to be less $$$ than all of the places I’m looking at right now. Is there a place where I can find the stats of admitted freshmen to James Madison? I can’t find it on the link you gave me. Also, would I be living only with people that are international relations majors?

The stats to admitted freshmen to james madison are the same as the rest of the university. There is no separate application, you just put “james madison college” as your major (it fills up on a first come, first serve basis). Your GPA is lower than the average, but your SAT is higher than the average so you would probably be a good candidate for admission.

No, you would not live with only international relations majors thank goodness! Case hall has a honors college floor, james madison students, and plenty of students in different majors as well. But a large number of freshmen living there are likely to be from james madison. If you have any more questions, I will be a james madison freshman this fall and I will likely be able to help you :)

update: I’m also doing physics next year.
I’m still interested in hearing my chances at schools besides MSU

UMich-Ann Arbor: Reach
Occidental College: Slight Reach
Syracuse: Match to Slight Reach
Northeastern: Match to Slight Reach
American University: Match to Slight Reach
Babson College: Match to Slight Reach
U Wisconsin- Madison: Reach
Quinnipiac: Safety
Robert Morris: Safety
Boston U: Slight Reach

The Slight reaches would become matches depending on what your ACT score is. Good luck

Thanks fa-la-la-lena! Anyone else?

I second fa-la-la-lena…

UMich - Reject. I don’t see this happening at all. UMich wants usually 2100+ and 3.8+ from OOS Applicants.
Occidental College - Likely in.
Syracuse - Match/Low Reach
Northeastern - Match
American University - Match
Babson College - Match
U Wisconsin- Madison - Reach. Easier than UMich, but only slightly.
Quinnipiac - Likely In
Robert Morris - ?
Boston University - Match. Your GPA is above their average GPA (3.0) but only slightly. Your SATs are in range. I think you have a good shot at this school.

Chance me too! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/523346-alabama-new-york-city-chance-new-senior.html

^ I would agree that BU is more of a match than a reach because of your SATs

good to improve, get that writing SAT score up, I know you can do it. My advice use Barrons SAT book, and intensely memorize the writing section part. Just keep practicing and youll do great.

Do some sports too. you dont wanna look like a sucker who spends all his time studying and no physical skills, or even trying to do physical work.

^ Sports are completely overrated. Honestly, unless you are quite excellent in sports, joining for the sake of taking a sport does not improve your chances. I think your ECs are fine as they are.

I do archery for fun and have won a competition or two. I won’t do anything in addition to that though because I’m not into that kind of stuff. I did do house basketball in 9th grade and got like 2nd place in the “play offs” if that counts. I’ll check out Barrons, I’ve heard some good stuff about their books. I’ll take smart.cookie’s advice on sports though, but I still appreciate your feedback!
