Chance student with mediocre record at Boston, Syracuse, others?

I've made a few of these threads, but I like testing scenarios. By the time I apply, my stats should be:

3.8 or 3.9 gpa, unweighted. If my class ranked, I would be in the top 5%.
Expected 28-30 on ACT (I've taken quite a few practice tests and it looks promising)
120 hrs. volunteering at library
Two years working at library
Two years volunteering at humane society
Two years volunteering at local charity's offices

Math: Algebra I, Geometry, Business Math
Science: Health, Nutrition Science, Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, possibly self-studied Anatomy and Marine Biology courses
English: Etymology, English I-IV, American Lit, British Lit.
Social Sciences: World Geography, State History, World History, U.S. History, Civics, Economics.
Foreign language: Spanish I and II
Government: [Study of government, -isms, etc.], U.S. Constitution
Religious (I go to a religious school): Foundations for Living, Successful Living, New Testament, Old Testament.

POSSIBLY self-studying to take: AP Biology, English Language/Comp., Environmental Science, and Psychology.

Schools
Fordham University
Boston University
Syracuse University
University of Maryland - College Park
Emerson College
Simmons College
SUNY - Stony Brook

Out-of-state at all of these. I'm open to suggestions, too. You can probably tell that I'm a prospective journalism major from this list.

uh… in at all of those…

Not mediocre.

By CC standards, it is.

^You’re a good applicant, don’t get to intimidated by CC. It makes the average student feel inferior and trust me there is absolutely nothing wrong with being average, which you’re not. I’d suggest applying to your state school instead of SUNY Stony Brook since it’ll probably be cheaper. You could probably get into all of them.

I don’t want to sound like a snob but I wouldn’t go to my state school even if I got a full ride.

Thanks for the input - CC does intimidate me. I can’t help it. Seeing threads titled “help for failure” only to open it and see four years of entirely honors/AP classes and tons of EC’s is really disheartening.

Apparently I can’t edit my post, but I want to add Temple to the list.

Bump? I hate doing this.

In at Temple University. I’d say add a reach or two to your list.

^ I thought Fordham would be a reach?! I really don’t know where else to apply, if I need more reaches…

EDIT:// Ideal criteria: decent journalism program, preferably between Boston and DC geographically. Not in the middle of absolutely nowhere - and if it is, I need a bus/train station within walking distance. Sorry.

I was going to say Mizzou for Journalism, but it is in the middle of nowhere, unfortunately.

Perhaps you should check out NYU and GWU? Both in large, beautiful cities, and both are excellent schools that offer Journalism programs.

Your lack of AP classes could be a problem, though.

I’d say if your ACT score is around a 28-30, Fordham would be a match.

You seem to have a good shot at your schools.

I’d choose either BU, NYU, or Emerson if you are going into journalism.

Unoriginal -

If I applied at NYU I would have to take SAT Subject Tests and they don’t offer much aid if any. Same with GWU. :frowning: I wish I could have taken AP classes, but my school didn’t offer any, so I’m going to have to study independently for the tests.

Here at Temple, you’d get honors, and a pretty decent scholarship.

Monarchial- Ah, I see. Sorry, I didn’t see that you required significant financial aid, in which case NYU, as you said, offers very little. However, GWU is the most expensive school in the country, but they offer the most need-based financial aid in the country a well. However, I don’t know if GWU wants subject tests, so I don’t know if you’d want to/have to take them.

If your school doesn’t offer AP classes, the college will understand, and they will acknowledge your course rigor if you took the most difficult courses you school offers.

That’s nice to hear!

I didn’t know GWU offered that much aid! I don’t think I could get in, but it’s most definitely worth looking into.

FWIW, Monarchial, GWU is very generous with aid.

Bump bump bump.

Any opinions on Loyola - Chicago and DePaul?
