Chance me for: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Cal Tech, UC Berkeley, Vanderbilt, UCLA, UCI (Safety), UCSD, Brown, USC, Amherst, Cornell.

My best friend created a similar chance thread. We've had all our classes together and we wanted to see who would "chance" into the better college.

Since Neil DeGrasse Tyson worked with Carl Sagan (who hosted the original Cosmos) and Tyson now hosts the remade Cosmos, can I expect you, in thirty or so years, to be hosting the third incarnation of Cosmos?

first off all the last 6 are pretty much 100% with that resume. where you have admitted to lacking is in ECs, which may be a big deal since your academic achievements have been surpassed by 100s of other applicants to the elite schools like Stanford and Harvard, which look more for what you have done to get yourself involved. I would say Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Cal Tech don’t keep your hopes too high. The rest are all fantastic schools and you WILL get in to at least one so don’t stress. Also, you should have replaced the income part with race becasue most of these schools are need blind for admissions but your ethnicity plays a huge role

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1631318-what-should-i-do-to-get-into-these-colleges.html#latest</a></p>

All the schools seem like matches!

IMHO, I’d say you’re in for all of them except Harvard, Priceton, Yale, and Stanford. By no means are you ruled out of those four, but your EC’s are underwhelming. I think those four are reaches right now, but I don’t doubt that you could get into at least one of them if your recommendations, essay, and interview are good.

Chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1631743-do-i-have-a-remote-chance-at-cornell-will-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

EC’s underwhelming… Bro, @Nflpackers96 I worked with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Probably the most famous astrophysicist of today.

Reaches for all expect for UCs

…Holy crap Neil Tyson? Damn thats crazy. Do you think you can get him to maybe write a rec for you? That would be crazy haha. You have academics down, but as said before, your EC’s aren’t incredibly excellent, at least for the ivies.

Harvard - Reach
Yale - Reach
Princeton - Reach
Stanford - Reach
CalTech - Reach
Berkeley - Match/Low Reach
Vandy - Slight Reach
UCLA - Match
UCI - Safety
UCSD- Match/Safety
Brown - Mid Reach
Cornell - Low Reach
Amherst - Mid Reach
USC - Match

The Ivies are reaches for everyone.

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1631993-help-a-student-with-a-low-gpa-but-very-good-test-scores-will-chance-back-asap.html#latest</a></p>

@TheApples I don’t get how Berkeley would be a low reach? I’m 300 points over their SAT average, considerably above their GPA average, and also strong on AP Exam Scores. He said he’ll write me a letter of rec as long as I go into astrophysics (which is the plan) with a double major in biophysics.

Then spell his name correctly. It’s Neil deGrasse Tyson. I’m not sure what you could have done in two weeks other than getting his coffee.

EC’s/Hooks: Worked with Neil Tyson for 2 weeks for a physics internship (Biggest hook)

two weeks Really?

@skieurope
ROFL. He’s an extremely humble person who doesn’t have secretaries around for superficial needs. I helped him in organizing numbers that he was crunching to study the movement of an object 1.1 lightyears away (put numbers in the super computer, manipulated the variables a bit, and let the computer calculate what it had to). Yes, I worked with him for 2 weeks, not only worked, but we also hung out quite a bit. He fondly loves Mac N Cheese, so whenever we’d be tired from a day of work, he, I, and a bunch of other kids working with him would go to a local sandwich shop and get a sandwich, tomato bisque, and a heaping bowl of Mac N Cheese. Oh my, I’m digressing. The reason that we only worked two weeks is that he’s extremely busy. He made this opportunity so that young bright minds could discover what it’s like to work in astrophysics, and to make their passion even stronger.

All that said, you had the misfortune of posting this the day that ivies released their RD results. As you can see, 95-97% of the applicants were rejected, so your top four will be reaches no matter what. Good luck.

I agree with skieurope, a 2 week internship (which I’m assuming you only got because you’re privileged) is in no way going to get you into the Ivies by itself. Your academics are fine (even though UW GPA could be higher) but your ECs are very much lacking. I’d be pretty surprised if you got into any of the first 5 schools you listed, but you have pretty good chances at the rest (except Brown, Cornell, and Amherst).

Reach for all the privates except USC. I see many of my friends with mediocre ECs and good test scores not getting in any of their colleges (UCs included). Btw I agree that the 2 weeks thing isn’t even close to a major accomplishment. Go look at RD threads of your colleges and see how many qualified applicants get rejected.

@BBanks I got in because of exceptional scores/passion/intellect. I got a scholarship to do the 2 week internship. And you keep telling me that’s mediocre. Do you guys even know who Neil Tyson is? <a href=“Neil deGrasse Tyson - Wikipedia”>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_deGrasse_Tyson</a> Most of the students in Ivy League don’t work with the most prominent scientists of their time. I can agree that Ivy’s are reaches, but schools like Amherst, Vanderbilt, and Cal Tech should be high matches. Like I’m literally on the 80th percentile for most of those schools.

@bluberaptor If you already supposedly know, then why do you ask? You asked, they responded. Don’t be so condescending.

@Mlolo98 Sorry got a little upset :stuck_out_tongue: I get really prideful and frustrated when I don’t hear the things I want to. Just something to improve :)

Although your stats are very good for the three you mentioned in the post above mine, all three have sub-15% acceptance rates, meaning that a lot more than stats factors into admission. There is a point where average stats cannot get much higher, which is the case with schools that have such low acceptance rates.

I don’t doubt that working with Neil deGrasse Tyson is quite impressive (although I’m not a physics person, I’m really quite jealous), but one experience won’t make your application. It is possible that you will get into the Ivy league, but your other extracurriculars are fairly average. You have a chance, but don’t be so foolish as to think that admission to any of the schools you listed (save for your safeties) is assured.

@Debater1996 of course. I would be happy just to get into 1 of the Ivy League schools I listed. And yeah, I’m not very physically talented, but I try my best.

Two weeks with Neil Tyson is a great topic for an essay, but by no means does it qualify you as an applicant with incredible ECs. I would be very surprised if you got into the likes of HYPS, given the info in the OP.

You also seem to give your test scores a lot of weight (comparing your scores to the school’s percentile range etc.). Don’t do this. I was just rejected by three schools where the average SAT score of incoming freshmen is below my score (Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Duke). I would seriously consider schools with slightly higher admit rates.
