also could i consider yale or cornell?
thanks

no man. same chances there too. nobody knows. apply and see.

thanks
anything which will increase my chances

@rt_08:r u going after these universities for the name factor? u know u cud find other good colleges for ur major. Also, don’t expect a lot of aid frm cornell.

i dunno ! maybe

that’s not good. please. do not fall in this trap. just because the school is the best in the world, it doesn’t mean that its best for you. know your limitations, know that Harvard is unpredictable for everybody. All u can do is apply and see. That’s it. Chances are a waste of your time.

thanks
any other college where my chances are high!

depends on your need of finances. an international student asking for aid … his chances are low at EVERY college, and SUPER-low at Ivys.
Don’t worry mate, i’m in the same boat as u are!

anyway thanks adrivit,i really appreciate your response

thanks once again.

ok i saw ur previous conversation yar… all the best to get on to a good B School. and i need a help out from u. Am doing my Be final year now and have planned to do MBA in Australia… Could u help me out on how to approach…

OK plbrar, I am an indian student too
I have taken a gap year and a probably applying to MIT this yr
I applied last year and got rejected.

OK to be brutally honest, you have no chance in hell for MIT, if you are asking for aid. Neither do I, and I am not asking for aid this time (and I have a 2320 in SAT 1 and 800 in chem, lit and math2c). The reason is that MIT receives 2000 intl apps a year, and chooses arnd a hundred. Now think, what kind of kids apply to MIT? Only the really really smart ones, the science nerds mostly. To compete with them, you need superb scores in both sats and academics. You also need to show intense participation in science competitions like national/international science olympiads, etc.

Seeing your income, you def need a lot of aid. You thus have 3 choices:
- go for postgrad
- take a loan
- go to a medium or low level uni which might (repeat might) give you more aid.

Or you could try your luck and apply for partial financial aid, like say arnd 50%, and take a loan for the rest. Be warned though: the current economic climate in the us means that unis have less money for intls.

By the way, if you are in 12th, what the hell are thinking giving the sats so late? you know that you have to give sat2 also. and all by january.

Good luck to you in you apps anyways. Just do the smart thing by spreading them arnd:
2 dream unis, 3 possibles (say USC or BU or sumthin) and 2 backups (like purdue).

rt_o8: the same advice to you as to plbrar; its a tough economic climate and aid is non-existent. Even the so called need blind universities like harvard mit yale etc are not as need blind as you think. TO get aid, you need to get accepted, and you only get accepted if you are like, the best of the best. There is a lot of intl competition, and teh other guy has done reseaarch, gone to physics intl olympiad and got a 2380. So be practical; apply to many reaches because for a finaid intl student, THERE ARE NO REACHES

dude are u joking? financial aid is not a factor for MIT.

mit dartmouth princeton harvard yale middlebury amherst williams are need blind and meet full need for internationals…

OK bro, lemme give you a little reality check.
See what the universities claim, is not necessarily 100% true. If in uncertain economic times like these, with less americans being able to pay their fees and endowments shrinking and universities being forced to cutback on expenditure, admissions commitee are faced with tough choices. You must agree that there is a limited quota of the number of internationals they will admit: it can vary from 8-15% depending on the uni. I think MIT has an unofficial quota of around 100-120 intl yndergrad applicants every year, for which they have around 2000 applicants. These are some of the best and the brightest. Perhaps India might get 5-6 seats from there, MAXIMUM. I think maybe 3-4 might be more correct.

NOW, the adcom has to choose from many brilliant kids. Who will it choose: the 2280 who can afford to pay full, or a 2360 who wants full finaid. Its a no-brainer.

Even though MIT has an endowment of almost 10 billion, we dont know the lossed they have faced this year. Usually, unis spend arnd 5% a year. Now, thats not as much as we think. MIT has 500 students, arnd 800 professors (who all need to be paid) and spends a ****load on equipment every year. The fact is that every dollar counts. So they would much rather have a student who pays full (and intl students bring in forex, dont forget) rather than one who takes away a seat (and caused a loss, in effect).

Need blind is a lie. No matter how rich and how well endowed a university is, even harvard and MIT, asking for finaid will cause them to weigh your application more rigorously. Its just the degree of rigour (which depends on the funds they have to give) that differs. And I say right now they will be very very rigorous.

And even if they accept you, they will just not give you teh amount of finaid you need. This is very common with India. my friend got into yale, asked for full finaid, received half. And he was the lucky one, some people dont receive at all.

So spidey, it is, unfortunately for us, a big big factor. I thought just like you last year, but the time i spent in this gap year working at professional american university counsellor has shown me the facts.

today what makes me so enthusiastic to see profile of indians;;;;;;i think its not going to be fierce within india only—its among the stds of whole world -and south asia -me from nepal.
i have learnt lots of dicussion of MIT and harvard,BU or purdue in this thread …i was very much impressed by the so inquistive and versatile stds that india has-and i will encourage any toppers and stds having best personal essays as well as good recommendations for apply to Ivy if u have 2100+ SAT I scores and around 750+ in each subject tests with 4 out of 4 GPA.
There were nepali stds who got enrolled into Harvard and MIT last year. This year many stds are applying to stanford, upenn, amherst and reed college. Also Amherst,Vassar from admitted through ST.Xavier’s College Nepal and Williams, georgetown from BNKS-nepal are just an example how tough the competition is -we are competing among nations--------
and its sure not to worry of financial aid-i think MIT guarantee full aid if u can demonstrate your need -these universities do not compensate best students over only a couple of thousand of dollars-they have many many millions of dollars every year -

also haven’t u guys think of IIT--------------- its MIT of india…
class of 2013 from nepal-CC

Ya I’m giving IIT -jee again for a higher rank.

can you tell me some more colleges where i can apply?(i mean safeties…)
i am in a hurry otherwise abhimanyuk you just watch it…(you have entangled yourself in a very very complex situation

I really dont get what you mean when you ask me to watch it? I gave you some honest advice.

And what is this complex situation?

Safeties would be: viginia tech, indiana, michigan, purdue for engineering, to name a few

how are those safeties if he’s applying for financial aid?
And also, universities like purdue, for example, require a financial certificate to prove you can fund your entire college costs.
