Chance the INDIAN STUDENT

congrats! you have an excellent academic record and the ec’s will just add to it…make sure you apply to several top unis ranging from most selective to moderately selective…you’ll get plenty of info regarding the selectivity patterns online. Make sure you do great on the Sats…Also, I’m pretty sure you’ve been given prizes/awards/certificates for your good grades in high school and stuff…don’t forget to mention that on your application…that’s what they really look for-academic excellence.
All the best!

whom r u referring to?

lol confused_female is confusing :D

yes now reply please

very few chances i’m afraid…ec’s not at all impressive and the sat scores dont help…u either have great sat scores or great ecs…if not both…i would suggest that you get write a great essay and consult some people…or books…that is prolly the only thing that may get you in…or lower your standards a little bit?..there are colleges which will probably suit u better than mit.

My SAY Subject scores are in-
Math level 2- 800
Physics- 800
Chemistry- 800
And i will answer the SAT 1 again in december( got a lowly 1930 last time coz i was unwell, guarante at least 2100)
now wat say?
any chance?

SAT scores are only one dimension of the whole picture. But those are fantastic results, well done :)

thankyou
but do i even stand a chance with financial aid?

Noone can say buddy, depends on your complete profile and even then it’s a matter of how you present yourself. SAT scores don’t matter much. Anything above the 50 %ile of the school is MORE than enough, these scores only act as entry passes to the desks of the application readers. Don’t fret much over them.

swan
which colleges do u reccomend to me

U guys are smart enough to understand tt MIT, Stanford, Princeton, etc are the IITs of US. Fact of the matter is tt even a person who got 97%in board exam is not guaranteed a direct admission in IITs.

Basically Us uni’s are similar in this account. Even if you have perfect scores in SAT, fantastic ECs, admission is not guaranteed. Take my best friend (a year older) for example, he got 2400/2400 for SAT1 and 800 for maths level 1 & 2 and also Physics. His Ecs were exceptionally good. He helped out in prisons, taught maths and English to poor students, was a member of UNICEF and helped out in various events organised by them. He did everything possible. Last year he applied to MIT, Stanford, Yale n Princeton (with no financial aid), and didn’t get into any. He wasted 1 year n went to Berkeley this yr.

the point is tt there is no point in asking us to chance anyone cause there is no way anyone can tell you what is enough what is not.

About the financial aid issue, US uni’s are filthy rich. They give aid to many students. But the problem is that they are not so generous towards international students. Mainly because they noe tt are many smart influential people with millions dollar in their bank account who are gonna apply to their uni. so they will think a trillion times before giving admission to a person who needs financial aid, but will not hesitate in giving admission to a person who doesn’t need financial aid (provided you have the marks). For Ivy League you mainly need bank balance-no brain rich brats are gladly welcomed.

Lastly there are uni beyond MITs, Stanfords, etc.

Try looking at public universities. Some are good, comparable to the top few. Not necessarily as good as MIT but nonetheless their degrees are valuable.

For example good uni for engineering include:
-Georgia Tech
-UC Berkeley
-UCLA
-Purdue (don’t underestimate this uni)
-University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
-University of Michigan- Ann Bor

The best part of these universities is that most give financial aid based on merit. And I’m sure since you are thinking of applying to MIT, Stanford, etc, you are smart. Hence getting a scholarship is also not a big deal. Because unlike MITs and Other top unis, ur academic achievements are better appreciated here.

So think before applying. Any comments are appreciated.

purdue cannot offer 90% aid (through merit) for internationals, neither can berkeley (and it also requires proof of entire funding), mostly same with the rest. The ones who need a lot of aid, and mostly we are those ones, have better chances at the colleges mentioned before…even though it’s a sad fact.

Purdue does have a substantial amount of aid thought…many friends of mine have gone into it.Yea sadly, fin aid offered by state run unis is quite low as compared to private unis.but then their fees are also comparably low…so you have to weigh your options.
i would recommend giving duke, washington university at st louis and carnegie mellon a shot.
an congrats to whoever got 800 in all their sats…i screwed up mine…

how much did u get swan

ofcourse when we ar talking about purdue and duke u need to understand that these universities r nit vry generousin giving Fin Aid

But these uni’s are cheaper and are as good as the rest. they have world class acedamic programmes. a bit of loan and the scholarship, financing your education in these should not be a problem.

Carnegie Mellon is not bad at all. There are many Indians in that uni. Many of friends went there as well, and not all had perfect scores in the SAT.

No uni is generous when it comes to providing financial aid to international students. So if you do not get into MIT etc, you need to look for good alternatives. And in that case Purdue, UIUC, University of Wisconsin-Madison, etc are not a bad alternative.

and will i get admission get there

rt_o8: I think you can make it all of the university i mentioned, including Carnegie Mellon. Only doubt would be the MITs, Stanford, etc. Guessing about those uni’s would be a long shot.

Hard to say without out yr sat scores.
