Chance the kid who took the opportunity to make her SATs worse...

Stats:
Caucasian, female senior in HS
Public School in PA

Intended Major - Either Humanities or Linguistics with minors in German and Latin/Classics

GPA - 3.81 UW 4.31 W
Rank - 1st Decile (top 10%)
SATs - 650CR 630M 700W = 1980T Superscored...I doubt this new score even makes a difference, as I only improved the section that doesn't really matter.
SAT IIs - 570 German, taking Lit, Bio, and US History. I blow at language tests. Will this hurt?

Courses 9th-11th:
English - All Honors
History - All Honors
Math - Honors in 9th grade, then dropped to "accelerated," plus AP Stat
Science - regular level all three years
Language - German 2, 3, and 4

Senior Courses - AP Biology, AP Economics, APUSH, AP German, Honors Humanities, Latin I, and Latin II (note: no math class or Physics senior year. They wouldn't fit because of stupid block scheduling, and I just really liked all of my other classes too much to drop any).

Recs: In short, my German teachers hate me, and my Latin teacher barely knows me -- so, no language recommendations. Will this be bad? I think I've got decent ones from a Chemistry, English, and History teacher.

EC's:

-National Honor Society
-won second place at the German Fallfest Competition at Millersville University
-scored in the 85 percentile on the AATG German exam
-working as a cashier at a supermarket for a year
- treasurer of Student Historians Club for two years
-worked with special needs kids and helped them do crafts/helped organize activities for them to do (during school for the past two years)
-"Walking Tour" I'm a tour guide for the elementary school kids (this year'll be my fourth). I take them to different historically significant landmarks in our town and explain why they're important.
-member of the Civil War Heritage Foundation (Civil War Reenacting organization) for five years

Schools I'm definitely going for:

Boston U
UChicago (EA...not gonna happen)
NYU (CAS)
Emory
GWU
U Delaware (OOS, Honors College?)
U Maryland (OOS, priority consideration)
USC

Thanks a ton!

I think you have a fair chance into almost every school on your list, but maybe except Emory and UChicago(I think they tend to be more pickier on GPA)
Your ECs look OK, but not that outstanding. But if you work hard enough on your essays, I think you'll make it!

Thanks. I thought my SATs, GPA, and EC's...heck, I thought EVERYTHING would kill me at a majority of these schools.

don't lose confidence in application.Your everything is good.

Boston U low-reach/match
UChicago (EA...not gonna happen) reach(work on the essay!)
NYU (CAS) high-match/low-reach
Emory low-reach
GWU match
U Delaware (OOS, Honors College?) no idea
U Maryland (OOS, priority consideration) no idea
USC match/high-match
good luck!

would you chance me back? <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/585010-chance-me-ivies-other-schools.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/585010-chance-me-ivies-other-schools.html</a></p>

I've never heard of anybody needing a recommendation specifically from a foreign language teacher. I think you are safe there.

Ah, I know I don't need a recommendation from a foreign language teacher. I just thought it might help since I intend to do a lot with language in college.

And thank you PolarNs, you made me feel a bit better.

Bumping for more input.

Bumping again. Do y'all think I'll get into at least one of those...and by one of those, I mean one that isn't University of DE.

Bump!!!!!!

don't worry too much. I do think you have decent chances at most of those schools. You have great grades, but yes your test scores may hold you back. Your SAT is a bit low, especially the combined math and cr score, and a 570 on SAT II will hurt. Are you considering retaking? Unless you apply ED I would highly recommend retaking SAT and SAT II german.

you knew some of your teachers hate or don't really know you so why did you ask them for recommendations in the first place? can you request them not to submit those? Your ECs are pretty okay, much better than mine indeed.

Boston U - slight reach
UChicago (EA...not gonna happen) - definitely reach
NYU (CAS) - reach/ slight match
Emory - slight reach
GWU - match
U Delaware (OOS, Honors College?) - match/safety
U Maryland (OOS, priority consideration) - no idea
USC - no idea

good luck.

Chance me back please!!!
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/585078-chance-me-these-schools-please-urgent.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/585078-chance-me-these-schools-please-urgent.html</a></p>

and although I do think it's very likely to get into at least 2 of those schools, I recommend adding 1 more match and 1 more safety. Since I don't know what kinds of schools you are interested in I cannot give you any suggestions though, sorry.

"you knew some of your teachers hate or don't really know you so why did you ask them for recommendations in the first place? can you request them not to submit those? Your ECs are pretty okay, much better than mine indeed."

I didn't ask those teachers for a recommendation. I was just concerned that, since I'm going to do a lot of work with languages, the colleges would want to hear something from my German or Latin teachers.

"Are you considering retaking? Unless you apply ED I would highly recommend retaking SAT and SAT II german."

I'm taking three other subject tests in November to try to knock the German one out. Will this suffice?

And thank you for your input. I have a local safety school that I'm pretty much guaranteed a spot at and will look for another match. I like bigger schools in big city locations, generally, so if anyone would like to make a suggestion...

I'll chance you definitely but have to go to school now, so I'll just say thanks for now!

I think some of these schools might be a reach, especially for your SAT II's.
I think colleges like Emory would prefer students who have SAT II's within the 700 range, but then again, I don't know a lot about how colleges choose students. If you do ED for one of the reach ones, it might give you a better chance.

That is what I figured, but I still have November to take three more SAT II's. I'm aware that the German one didn't go well, but that's (hopefully) not one of the top ones that they'll see.

Bumping again. Anyone else think that my list is too reachy or have suggestions for big schools in urban locations outside of PA that I could go for?

Bump...last post, folks, gimme some input!

Anyone want to suggest another school that has a good Linguistics program that would be a match for me?

Just bumping for the heck of it.

haha you're not the only one...i was too :(

you have a pretty good chance at all of them. i live in ga and i think your chances at emory are fairly high but it's more of a science related school..., but im not sure about univ. of chicago. some colleges really look at your rigor of curriculum and your five ap courses may fall short just a bit (is that your total # of aps?). you're in good shape.

Thanks...yeah, five's my total. But that's all that most kids at my school are able to take. 5-7 is usually it.
