EC's:

I educated a 9 year old autistic child for a year on my own time twice a week. I taught him how to speak correctly, write, think and express himself. Over the year, his family saw improvement, and I am very proud of this.

This summer I plan on going to Africa and helping for a few weeks over there. I will take pictures with my dSLR and create a portfolio/story and maybe get a scholarship.

My GPA is low because my family (single mom, father committed suicide) went through a financial crisis and we were almost homeless for a while. Sometimes I did my homework in our car full of newspapers, where I would then sleep. I had to spend my junior year in Utah where I knew no one and had to adjust, but this is where my grades transformed.

I have a huge upward curve: straight A's junior and senior year.
(I'm a junior but it's projected)

I will graduate in California after spending my Junior year in Utah.
I want to major in either cognitive science or business...

What are my chances at Brown, UC Berkeley, + any suggestions? I have safeties as well...

Well... depends on how good Sophomore year was... freshman year doesn't count.

I think you have a great chance at Berkeley. Brown is obviously a little harder, but I think you are still very competitive. Hopefully, you qualify for in-state tuition, or better yet, you get into Brown and receive their great financial aid package. Good Luck.

Thanks for the answer. My sophomore year was mild; I had a few B's and C's in my AP and honors classes. But I had an amazing junior year with straight A's and 3 AP classes.

I also want to translate a French book my Great Aunt from the island of Corsica. She was a scholar who wrote and supposedly proved Christopher Columbus was from the island of Corsica. Translating this would be amazing.

If you have any other suggestions that will help, I would be very grateful!

well your sat scores arent very strong for berkeley or brown, but that thing with the autistic child will jump off the page
7/12 % chance for those two schools

also look into Northwestern and Johns Hopkins and USC

good luck

Some good EC's OK GPA....and SATs a bit low...
I would say both are probably low reach

Yes, I think UCBerkeley would be considered a match and Brown would be considered a reach for you. They would be much harder for your stats, but your story is very unique and will jump right out of the crowd of applicants. Just focus on your family/economic difficulties and your willingness to help others (heavily emphasize on the autistic child), and you will have a good chance of getting into both.

also, i'll try bringing the SAT to 2250.

also, I made a website for someone. maybe that will help?
The Sacred Scroll of Love | the Marriage Bill of Rights

aand also, I also want to translate a French book my Great Aunt from the island of Corsica. She was a scholar who wrote and supposedly proved Christopher Columbus was from the island of Corsica. Translating this would be amazing.

so with these, and my original post, do i have good chances for Brown??
thanks!!

Ucb is likely with in-state status. The perfect essay could get you into brown and ucb...i was very interested in your story..completing your homework in a car filled with newspapers is truly unique and inspiring at the same time.......you should consider: Williams college, pomona, stanford (take a risk), cornell, nyu, reed, and boston college.

I think you have very good chances, even for the higher schools because of your EC's. Ivies eat all of that stuff up, and I have friends that got lower on the SATS but made an ivy league school because of their EC's (which happened to be less impressive than yours)
