Chance the schools I've applied to please! (No ivies, Average student)

GPA: 3.75
SAT: 1980 (W: 710, M: 640, R: 630, Essay: 11)
SAT II: Mandarin (770), Literature (590)
Ethnicity: Asian (did not put that down in common app)
Graduating from school in Asia; many students are sent to Ivies
IB Diploma Candidate
HLs - Biology, English, Psych
SLs - English, Mandarin, Math
However, senior year first semester are the WORST grades I've ever received. I'm too scared to check my grades, but I have at least 2 Cs I think. I don't know how much that'll affect my chances...

Difficulties - My dad died when I was 11 and I've had depression since the beginning of senior year (which is one reason why I'm doing bad in my classes) Can I tell colleges that, that I've had depression so that's why my grades are bad? or is that not a legitimate reason?

Family - Parents have no graduate school. Our EFC is 0. My mom has no salary and no job. I'm applying for financial aid for all the schools that are need-blind, but the ones that are need-aware, I'm not applying for financial aid, so this shouldn't affect my chances.

Short Answer E.C. Essay - talked about theatre
Personal Essay - talked about death of my dad in a positive light and travelling
My counselor (who was a Harvard admissions officer) said they were great essays that really showed who I was, so I'm pretty confident with that.

I have over 500 hours in theatre. I've traveled to Kuala Lumpur to perform theatre and oral interpretation and I'm going to Bangkok this year (only the best from my school get chosen). I am an officer of the International Thespian Society (honours society for theatre). I am one of the very few Asians who participate in theatre. Other than that, nothing too special about me.

Schools I'm applying to (all majoring in psychology):

NYU
I'm not too confident with my "Why NYU?" essay, because it's not that special. In the other essay, I talked about my interest in psychology and theatre, and how I carried out psychology experiments and wrote a short research paper on it. Very happy with my "what intrigues you?" essay - I wrote about the park near my house.

Wesleyan
No essay.

Vanderbilt
No essay.

Northeastern
Boston University
My essays weren't that special, but they were okay. I'm hoping my personal essay & EC essay will make up for that.

Chapman

USC
Rushed on these essays... not that great.

Pepperdine
Again, counselor thought this one was great. I managed to include my love for theatre in this essay about how I will contribute to their community of faith, learning, and service. I also talked about my mission trip to Fresno, California and my leadership abilities as well as my knowledge of the Bible & interest in apologetic.s

I'm going to class now so sorry if I missed any detail. Please tell me if I do! Thanks sooo much in advance!

Bump! Please, anyoneee?

I’ve had very few honours classes in 9th and 10th grade (Honors Global Studies, Honors English both years) and the rest were average classes. I took Algebra II in 9th grade but retook it in 10th grade. A plus is that those were easy classes, but in 11th grade I started to take IB classes (IB Diploma) so I’m taking MUCH harder classes but still got the same grades as before, so I obviously improved. Just senior year first semester grades are really bad…

AP Mandarin - 5
SL Psych - 5

Graduating from international/American school in Asia

Bump! Pleaseee :frowning: I feel like everyone else is getting responses.

Honestly they might all be a tiny bit of a reach, solely based on GPA/SAT, and taking into consideration that you don’t have a lot of confidence in your school-specific essays.

I think you have a pretty good chance at most of those schools (though Vanderbilt is obviously a reach…it is for anyone). Not sure on the depression aspect…sorry for your loss, but I would call schools or just ask around about that.

You have slightly higher stats than me, and I am applying to BU as well. I would say that you have a 50/50 shot at NYU and USC, and Vandys a reach… but overall you should be great just about everywhere else.
And I’ve struggled with depression as well, I feel you. I’m sorry for your loss…
