wondering if i had a good shot at cornell ED

location: Montgomery High School, NJ

GPA weighted: 95.5 (that means my average grades were 90+)
SAT: 2370 (770CR, 800 Math + Writing)

SAT 2: Chem, USH, Bio, World History, Math II, Phys all 800s

-Race: indian
-I'm a first-generation immigrant and am foreign born, is this any help?
-should I put English as my second language?(it was, however, now I'm more comfortable speaking English)

-11 APs taken before graduation, 6 (USH, Bio, Chem, AP Eng Lang, Calc AB, Stat) before applying, 5 on all of those except English (I'm predicting here)
-top 10% of class, PSAT jr year: 226, should be in for National Merit

-ECs
-300 hrs at local hospital since freshman yr
-Model UN + Youth and Govt
-4 yrs of wrestling, sr. yr varsity (but I won't be able to say that when applying)
-job as lifeguard
-will be training to be EMT this summer (will put this on app), will have volunteered as EMT for 3 months before applying

If I could get some honest opinions that would be great

As long as you are in the top 10% of your class and have a good fit with the specific college at Cornell that you are applying to (there are 6 of them I believe) you are good to go. Nothing is certain, Cornell had a record number of applicants this year and record low admissions rate <20%.

You are by no means assured a spot, but your chances are very good (greater than 50 percent I would say). Your Subject Test scores surprised me!

unweighted = 90.5 (our school just adds five to honors/AP), class rank = top 10% to be sure, maybe top 5%, but our school doesn’t rank individually and states only whether or not you’re in top10%)

note: my GPA (UW 90.5) is still a 4.0 from my school, which was just 3 yrs ago ranked #4 in the state, now I admit the GPA isn’t super amazing but it is still a 90+ avgd for all subjs, which is basically all APs or honors but I can see your point. The avg for kids from my school accepted to cornell was 95.8 weighted, mine’s is 95.5, some more feedback appreciated

well, you have pretty good chances as you probably already know. But i have a few questions for you…Why Cornell? Because Cornell ED will be an easier applicant pool to compete against for a strong applicant like you, so you should really consider other top schools too and maybe not go ED on any school. And what major are you thinking of? and HOW DID YOU GET 800’S ON ALL THOSE SUBJECTS?? what is ur secret?! lol

Not much of a secret except a good number of long days. But to your originial question Invisible Man, I doubt that I am that strong of an applicant. My scores are good but I have no “hook” great ECs, or legacy. I was also wondering, if anyone knows, whether being a first gen foreign born immigrants ups your chances at all. Thanks.

I don’t think that being a foreign-born immigrant will help your chances unless your family experienced a significant hardship in coming here. This is especially true if your parents are college graduates. (Actually, if your family is disadvantaged you might not want to apply ED, since it takes away your ability to compare financial aid offers.) Cornell will appreciate the diversity, of course, but there are lots of students with immigrant backgrounds to choose from.

Speaking another language fluently is a good credential, but probably not a significant boost either.

I think you have a fair shot even without any hooks, though. Just be sure to explain why you and Cornell are a good fit.
