Chance Thread.......Really confused

Hi all,

I am an International student, currently studying 12th Grade in a school which follows Indian curriculum CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).

I just wanted to know what my chances are in getting admission for Mechanical Engineering.

I don’t have GPA grading in my school. The grading is purely based on marks obtained:
9th - 85% (maths-A, science-A, social studies-A, English-B, Hindi-B)
10th - 90% (maths-A, science-A, social studies-A, English-A, Hindi-B)
11th – 72%(maths-C, physics-A, chemistry-B, computer science-A, English-A)

I had also received a scholarship in grade 11.

My school does not rank but the counselor put me in the top 10%.

ACTIVITIES :
I have been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders’ Conference (GYLC) in Washington/New York this year.
Swimming
Singing
Made Robot for science exhibition which uses sensors to travel through a maze and then using LED’s to show the intensity of the light in its path.
Made a presentation on Periodic Table for the Science Exhibition in Grade 9 and a presentation on Tessellation for the Maths exhibition.
Helped the team in coming 3rd in an inter-school robot competition
Information Head in the school Anti-Smoking Committee in which a presentation is going to be made to the Grade 9 and 10 students on the Harmful effects of smoking, why we smoke, how to stop smoking and the harmful chemicals present in cigarettes and cigars.
Participant in the Duke of Edinburgh Scholarship Program
Certificate of distinction in the Green Olympiad which is an Olympiad based on knowledge of the environment.
I have been learning Indian Carnatic Music vocal for over 10 years and have given a 2 and half hour concert. Apart from this i have also received the First Class Distinction in the Carnatic Music Vocal Junior Exam (which is pretty tough to get).
I have also been learning Carnatic Music violin for over 4 years and have recently won 3rd place in the Inter-House Talent contest held in my school.

SAT SCORES:
MATH - 730
CR – 600
W - 640

Gave the give SAT II's in November. Will get 700+ in Physics, Chem and Maths and hopefully if all goes well 750+.

Teacher Recommendations are good and the Guidance Counselor Recommendations are excellent.

Can't say much about the essays because i feel they are good but it depends on the adcoms view point.

I am not sure whether it is worth applying to Johns Hopkins or not because i am not sure whether it is a reach or a super reach.

While the SAT I scores are somewhat on the lower side for JHU, I think you should still apply because they strongly encourage international students to come. It also looks like you have a lot of strong extracurriculars and decent grades.

good luck :)

I'd say it's a super reach. Your GPA is too low, SAT scores are below average, but not too low. Additionally your a international student which makes you chances even lower on getting in. However, if you really want to go to JHU, I don't see why you shouldn't apply even if it is unlikely you get in

okay.....there are conflicting remarks about the grades and me being an international student.......could someone help me out on whether it is a reach or super reach

They encourage international students to apply, but that doesn't neccesarily mean it's easier. It's still harder

Your GPA average is like a 85% which is VERY low...I think that's a 3.2ish converted.

Your SAT of a 1970 is barely the 25th percentile for JHU (1990 is the 25th percentile).

With all of these things considered I believe JHU is a super reach

Just to clear up some misinformation given by zkevin...

...it is not harder for international students to be admitted to Johns Hopkins unless it is an international student applying for financial aid.

its only a 1990 for JHU? (not your score, the 25th percentile)

i don;t think 1990 is it...i think only the crit and math sections were given out as statistics

Thanks for the reply zkevin, admissionsdaniel, darkhope, assasin and mydarlingsally

Just to clear things up i am not applying for financial aid

And an 85% is not 3.2 converted but a 3.5-3.8 depending on the conversion system
