Chance Thread

Hi everyone, I received my Nov SAT score and just wanted some insights.

First generation
Asian
3.664 GPA Unweighted
1600 SAT ( 530 CR 600 M 470 W )
7 AP classes ( 5 in senior year )
3 years Key Club member (1 of the year I'm a lieutenant governor, which oversees several clubs in my county)
Summer job
~100 community hours
After school tutoring at local church
Independent tutoring

That's basically it. Do I have a good chance of getting in? I'm an instate. Thank you and please be honest!! One last question, is the short response answer as important as the big essay? Should I write a full 500 words paper?

We’re almost in the same range of GPA and test scores, and from who I’ve talked to (teachers, counselors, and this site), they all say that we’ve got a shot.

Assuming your essays turn out solid, I will say this: They will not say no, but they will either say yes or waitlist you.

Both essays they require you to write are significant in terms of your acceptance. The personal statement is what they use to get to know you, and the diversity essay is what they use to see if you would fit in well at the UW. Personally I did not write my essays with a word count in mind. Instead I wrote until I felt that my point was put across, and edited if it was too long.

Writing less than 500 words isn’t going to come off as careless, it’s the quality and care you put into the writing that they judge.

Chance me back, perhaps? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-washington/814185-nervous-applicant-any-insight.html

Thanks, anyone else can comment on this topic?

Your SAT score is a little bit low but I think your GPA and other stats make up for it. With good essays I think you have a decent chance.

Although your SAT is a little low and gpa is right around average for the admitted student at UW, the AP classes are a point in your favor. I’d say you’re a borderline applicant right now, but what will push you over the top is writing great essays. Don’t write them the day you submit your app; instead draft each first and have several friends, teachers, parents, whatever take a look at them and criticize them, then revise and repeat until you feel your essays really reflect your best effort. There is no guarantee this will get you in for sure, but this will definitely maximize your chances since the UW really values the essays on the application.

Also, get started as soon as possible. UW does rolling admissions, so the sooner you apply, the better your chances are of getting in. Don’t sacrifice essay quality just to get your application off a little sooner, but definitely try to submit well before the deadline.

I received the info for myUW on Friday and setup my account already. Now just waiting for the review to start! So anxious! Crossing my fingers…

My status changed to:

“We have received all materials required to review your application. Your application will remain in this status until decisions are finalized. We will inform you by postal mail when a decision is made.”

Does this mean they’re reviewing it now?

It means that they have everything and they will review it when they can. You won’t know exactly when it is, now all you do is wait for the decision.

Weird, I try accessing my MyUW status right now, and it’s saying the service is unavailable now. Hope it means they are updating my status…

Same here. Probably a universal error, but hopefully they’re starting to read my application!

^^^ It’s not working for me either.

lalalala I can’t hear you
