Chance to Chance an International ex-military

Hey guys, just a little about myself:

I'm from Singapore, and it would be a dream for me to study in a US LAC, and that is my primary and only focus for the next 4 years. While I am not too sure what I'll be majoring in(that's why we go to LACs right?), I'm inclining towards Physics and Mathematics, those being my better subjects.

Here are my stats:

Chinese male, 20 this year.
Public high school in Singapore

Academics:
SAT I : (predicted) 2250+
GCE A Levels: 4 As 1 B and a Pass in University level subject.
SAT II: (predicted) 800 Math II, 800 Physics , 800 Chem
Top 10 % in school

I did not have any opportunities in any of my years to engage in any AP classes, so I'll skip that.

Extracurricular:
-Played for a ranked amateur football(soccer) club for 3-4 years

-Non-commissioned officer in the Singapore Armed Forces for 2 years

-National Junior Squad for Chess when I was.. well.. 7-11 years old(irrelevant?)

I did not have much ECAs because, well, regrettably I spent the last 4-5 years of my life not fully engaged in school but rather caught up with the party and play scene. Have made a change ever since I enlisted in the army, and that is what I plan to elucidate in my essay.

Summer Activities:
-Overseas Community Involvement Programme at Batam, Indonesia, repairing and painting an orphanage.

-Received a National Commendation Award for participation in National Youth Envirolympics

-Invited and played in the Manchester United Football Camp, eventually captaining the U-16 internationals squad in the final match against the Manchester United U-15s

Financial Aid: Required, at least a half-ride.

I reckon I have a few stories to write for my essays, given that I have lived through a very unique life(i feel) with a plethora of experiences that makes me different from my peers. I'm hoping to be able to use my family situation and the failures and how I've come back from them through my life, and the things I've learnt about life in the military.

For recommendations, while they won't be exemplary and praising me to the seventh heavens, it wouldnt be too bad either.

Now for the schools I'd be applying to in no particular order:

Carleton College(Applying ED1)
Amherst College
Macalester College
Pomona College
Claremont and McKenna College
Grinnell College
Harvey Mudd College
Wesleyan College
Berea College

Please do give me a very honest feedback for my chances, and I'll definitely chance you back if I get the chance.

Would really love some ‘chancing’ here!

will definitely chance back!

gimme a chance please

Great chances all around. Pomona is more of a wildcard, but you are qualified for all of the schools. I think Harvey Mudd would be perfect for you, I was going to suggest it as soon as you said you were into mathematics. :)

Thanks man.

Have you factored in the international aid though, that’s what im most worried about :(

Great stats and overall profile:

Carleton College(Applying ED1)- Match
Amherst College- Low Reach
Macalester College- Safety
Pomona College- Low Reach
Claremont and McKenna College- High Match
Grinnell College- Match
Harvey Mudd College- Low Reach
Wesleyan College- Match
Berea College- Safety

I’ll be attending Pomona this fall and I know several Chinese applicants who got financial aid with almost full rides. Your stats are definitely in the contention and be assured you’ll be covered fully if you are accepted. The same goes for Amherst. I think Carleton does the need thing too and it also has some merit scholarships. Good luck! I think you’re bound to get into at least one of your low reach schools.

There is no such thing as a “safety” for an international student needing financial aid. Does. Not. Exist.

You’re also “predicting” 99th percentile test scores.

@nostalgicwisdom

By Chinese applicants d’you mean from the States or International students?

@polarscribe

I suppose you’re right about the safety.

Yeah for my predictions it’s based on the average of 10+ mock-tests I’ve taken so far for each paper.

Could you do chance me as well then?

Cheerios :)

giving this a good healthy dose of bum

you have a good shot at all of them. even if you are intl.

Chance me please! its on front page!

Oh, I see…yeah…you should report actual scores. It’s easier said than done to get the scores you predict :/

I mean Chinese international applicants.

Your EC’s are definitely your strongest point for sure, as your stats aren’t yet set in stone. Who knows? You may get a 2400, but you may have totally screwed up and gotten a really low score (I wouldn’t count on it, though). LAC’s love seeing “unique” and “diverse” applicants, which I’m sure you’re aware of, so your background will definitely come in handy. Don’t know much else for international applicants, though. Good luck!

alright ill definitely give this a healthy update after i get my scores

thanks for that commanderkeen. i thought my ECAs were my weakest points but its always good to get fresh persp :)

bump! will chance back!
