Chance to Emory

Hi guys,

I'm an entering college freshman.

I graduated high school with a unweighted GPA of 3.67 and a weighted GPA of 3.81. When I graduated, I was in the top 10% and I was rank #15 of of 187.

I made a 26 on the ACT and I didn't take the SAT. I chose to go to a community college(largest in the state) because I was given a full ride there.

Here is a list of the things I did in High School:

9th Grade: 1st place in the regional science fair and 4th place in the state science fair. President of the Science Club. About 60 hours of Peer Tutoring; about 28 hours of Soup Kitchen.

10th Grade: President of the Public Speaking Team. About 60 hours of Peer Tutoring; about 28 hours of Soup Kitchen.

11th grade: About 100 hours of Peer Tutoring; about 28 hours of Soup Kitchen.

12th Grade: 1st place in the School Science Fair. 1st place in the DECA Regional competition and 2nd place in the DECA State Competition.
Highest average in Pre-calculus, AP Biology, AP Macro-economics and Fundamentals of Art. Outstanding effort in AP English.
Vice President of DECA and Treasurer of Spanish Club. I was ranked as a Corporal in JROTC.
About 40 hours of Peer Tutoring, and 10 hours of Community Service. (JROTC)

What are my chances as of right now?

Is there anything I should be doing in college besides maintaining a 4.0 GPA?

What extra curricular activities should I join? Here is a list of the activities the CC offers:
Broadcasting Club, Campus Ministries, Drama Club, Photo Club, Psychology Club, SGA

Also, should I try transferring after 1 year of CC (Fall 2013)? I can complete 64 hours and receive an AS degree by the Fall of 2013. (I would have to go to college in the Summer as well)

Help me out guys! Bump

Also I’m a 17 year old Asian Indian Male - If that helps at all.

bump 10 char

Try to get into Phi Beta Kappa if your school has it

Thanks! But I’m going to be a college freshman. Can I apply to Phi Beta Kappa as a college freshman?

I plan to transfer after freshman year, so I hope to be in Emory as a Sophomore.

Any other suggestions?

Ok dude. Emory is a really competitive school. An ACT of 26 won’t cut it.
And your GPA is a little low. Do you think you could take it again in Sept.?

Oh I’m sorry! I’ve posted this question in different threads, but I forgot to mention here that I definitely plan to either take the SAT or retake the ACT.

I will be starting college in 2 weeks so any advice as to what extra curricular activities I should join there?
The options are listed in the first post.

I know my HS GPA is low. But I have a good reason! I was in India for 9th, 10th and 11th grades. I had to take two languages I had no prior exposure to! So I made 2 B’s and 2 D’s in those subjects. Every other subject on my transcript is an A.

Suppose I make it to the interview, do you think Emory will consider that?

Thanks for the reply though!

That’s better. actually that’s a bonus. You have outside experience that you could show off to the admissions people.

Lol thanks! I never thought that I could use that as a bonus! Where do I mention that, in the interview?

Also can u suggest the extra curriculars I should join, considering that I want to major in accounting and finance?

By the way, I have no clue what the SAT Subject Tests are about. Can you tell me whether I have to take them or not if I take the SAT? OR do you think I should just take the ACT again?

The problem is that I have already taken the ACT 3 times (made 26) but I haven’t sent a single score to Emory.

Will they ask me how many times I took the ACT when I submit the score I want?

I don’t think you have a very good chance at Emory…they look at your SAT/ACT as a transfer student also so you should try taking those again.

Again, I will be retaking the ACT/taking the SAT so no worries there.

Besides that, what are my chances of getting into Emory if I maintain a 4.0 in CC (which will only be for a year, after that I transfer)

Bump. Buh Bump-Bump.
