CHANCE to Get Into UChicago? Feel Free To Give Any Advice?

Hello friends! Feel free to give any advice.

I am a Chinese student, a non-US citizen who has been studying in a small private Catholic high school in NY.
Lacking in English, still practicing though.
Interested in majoring math related such as finance/economics; Interested in UChicago Common Core as well for I love humanities as well.

SAT I 1770 (Reading 540, Math 740, Writing 490)
SAT II planning to take Math 2 and Physics, maybe World History
Grades: 94 of Sophomore year, 98 first 2 quarters of junior year
Classes:AP Physics B exam with a score of 4 last year;currently AP Biology, AP US History and going to take AP Clac AB exam; planning to take AP Language&Composition, AP Micro/Macro Economics, AP Chemistry, AP Calc BC. I have also taken some other honor classes
NY state regents exam: I should be able to get an advance diploma with honors, but I don't think this is really gonna help to apply for a non-NY school.

Extracurricular:
National Honor Society
Model United Nations
Franciscan Youth Ministries(A service program, we usually help out at local churches)
Student Representative of Middle States Accreditation Committee
Male Choir and Chorus Class performing in concerts around the area.
Playing in the school Musical
Varsity Track& Field, Wrestling, Cross Country, Swimming

Awards:
Only some academic awards distributed by the school, I think this is REALLY HURTING me who is going to apply for UChicago math program. Our schools does't offer academic competitions such as Olympiad =(( Does this really matter? If so can anyone tell me some contests I should attend.

In addition, I am applying for the UChicago Summer Quarter Undergraduate program(Intro to Micor/Macro Economics) Does this help when I am going to apply next year? I know it is extremely hard to get into UChicago, feel free to tell me some other schools with excellent math/economics/finance programs.

Thanks a lot, really appreciate it:)

btw, for the SAT, I think by practicing I will get a score of 2100-2200 eventually

Take the TOEFL

Depending on your school, you might need to take the initiative. Start your own math club for competitions and leadership. Talk to your math teacher to introduce competitions. Participate competitions on your own. Take college math courses at nearby community college classes. UChicago is a great challenging school for you. Not too far out of reach but just far enough to keep you motivated. Also consider U Rochester, a major business school, where I will also apply. (I am also interested in Finance related majors.) Good luck!

If you can get your SAT up to a 2200+ your chances will drastically improve. Your ECs are good but nothing stands out, try for some more leadership positions. You’ll also need to write amazing and creative essay’s for UChicago. so practice.

My thread (chance back please): <a href=“Chances for Vanderbilt, UNC, NYU, UF, and Duke? - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1610985-chances-for-vanderbilt-unc-nyu-uf-and-duke-p1.html</a></p>

If you can get to the mid 2200s (ideally 2300+), you’ll be competitive if the rest of your app is strong.

Thank you guys for the sincere advice. Just wondering what are some good math competitions to take?

If you pull up your SAT score and continue doing well in your classes and AP exams, you’ll be a strong candidate. I’m not too familiar with math competitions, but off the top of my head I can think of the AMC. Also, if you can get a bunch of friends together, you should consider competitions like Moody’s Mega Math Challenge.

One thing I do want to mention (if it’s not too late and you haven’t already applied) is to rethink spending money on the UChicago Summer Quarter Undergraduate program, especially since you’ll be taking AP Micro/Macro next year anyway. Honestly, running these summer programs are just a way for the colleges to make money and will not improve your chance of admissions. However, if you’re genuinely interested in the program, then by all means go ahead, but I would suggest not taking the classes in school and just self-studing for the APs. In my opinion, AP Micro/Macro are not hard enough to justify spending a whole year and thousands of dollars to learn.

Honestly, U of Chicago has lots of Asian school drones to choose from. A good deal of them are probably better qualified. If you want in, you need to be DIFFERENT.

Try to get your SAT to 2250 +, it can be done with a lot of practice. Just practice hard for that. For math competitions look into American Math Challenge (probably the most important one) and stuff like Mu Alpha Theta, just look into what schools around you do for math competitions.

Try to bump up your SAT to 2250 range. That is probably your biggest boulder.

@pmmywest Thanks for your advice. After discussing with my parents, we decided not to take the summer undergraduate program since I am gonna spend a whole year on economics at school as well as not to waste such huge mount of money.

@CastlesInTheAir6 I’m glad I could help! I had a similar discussion with my parents.
