Chance to go into Prestigious Uni>>>

I'm not a great speaker,
I'm just your above average person - speaking academically
I held no leadership position in my so-far life...
I need help in deciding what extra-curricular activities.
My school offer the following:
- Debating - Can't Talk
- Chess Club
- Art Club, hardly anyone do anything
- Tutoring (Cross-aged tutorials - high schoolers tutor elementary)
- Book Club
- Sport - I have no chance, they select you to be on the team and you need to pass the reqs - I always failed
- Religious Club - None of the philosophy get absorbed...

I heard that 'reach' colleges/uni look for those who held leadership titles, but I never have one and will never have one. So... Can you tell me other ways like a plan to make up for the missing ideal?

Can you also tell me how what kind of volunteer work colleges look for and how does having a job can be considered?

Um... I also want to know what are the good uni apart from Ivy League, MIT & Stanford. My ideals of a good uni - not college because the majority of them are liberal arts. Like is there pre-med, pre-dent, pre-pharmacy, or in the Creative perspective, fashion design. I'm also interested in bio - esp genetics. I think my thread should be under international student but I hope I can be an exception. Thank you to all those who will (hopefully) contribute in helping me. Sorry...
Please if it's possible can you make the uni offer financial aid

Not enough info…while these are goos ecs …we need numbers (sats, sat2’s gpa, ap scores) ! These activities wont matter unless you are within range of an accepted student…

There are many good universities other than MIT, Stanford and Ivies… There are many state universities like University of California(But the application deadline’s passed on that one), Caltech if you want to do engineering or tech, Harvey Mudd, Wash U, Boston University.. But it all depends upon your interests, the major you want to pursue…

You cannot specifically say, ‘what’ a college looks for in a student. Most of them just want a diverse student body, academically qualified, but have passion for things other than studies too… Or at least thats what I think they do…

My SAT Critical Reading is 780, Math is 770. I don’t have GPA at my school. (I think I’m in the range). In addition, I am currently taking IB. But the downside is I don’t doing any extra-curricular activities or volunteer work or jobs to back it up. I’m in my junior year (Yr 11) for 2007 and senior year for 2008. I think I should apply for entrance into uni in 2008. My field of studies that I wanted to pursue is undecided. However, I like biology and fahion design. I like big uni because it offers a lot of clubs and activities but I don’t like being lost in crowd. Can anyone help me with choosing an extracurricular that sound good? Thanks again!

Special thanks to shruthibaskaran & ixjunitxi who have provided me guidance and good advices.

GPA, and Class Rank will matter in your decision. Leadership positions are essential to a college because they want to see that you have qualities that are supported by either your teachers (club advisors) or peers. Good luck though!

But what if my school does not offered much leadership titles - they only have SRC (Student Representative Council) and Class Captain. It’s hard to become one for me because I don’t speak out much and the teacher choose you (that’s what my friends say). Special note, I’m at a new school.

Special thanks to AY8888 who have helped answering my questions and contributed in this thread! :)

College_Go, excellent scores! Is there any way to volunteer/tutor other kids at either your school or another school? Also, maybe volunteer at a library or hospital. You could also maybe start a club in one of your field of interests. As far as the clubs you listed at your school, I would just get involved in some of them, but make sure that it is something that you would enjoy. Finally, Tulane is very good with financial aid. Best of luck!

Thank you poi, what you said is a big inspiration to me. Ok, I’ll try to work on it. :)
