Chance to only one school... this might be the last thread I make i chance baack

AP scores are in and all of my teachers have made the grade changes they promised for passing the Ap tests i took so what your about to see is what my college app will look like in november

Can you please tell me my chances at UC Davis?

Major- Religious Studies or Classical Civilizations (Its actually Biology but i heard biology is competitive to get into so im going to follow my teachers advice and pick 2 obscure majors)

SAT II: 640 Math 2 (retaking in Oct.) , 560 U.S History (cannot retake for obvious reasons)

ACT: 30 = 2040 SAT according to UC translation scale (should i retake?)

GPA: 3.55 UC GPA (Kinda Low I Know) 44 A-G Classes (i think i get extra points for taking more than 35?) and 11 AP/H Classes

Grade Progression-
10th grade- 3.20 UC GPA
11th Grade- 3.80 UC GPA
is this progression that UC's want to see? i only included 10+11 because that is when they start calculating GPA

So 10th+11th grade average come out to be 3.55 GPA

Rank: Top 10% out of 750+

Senior Courseload:
AP Biology
AP Calculus BC
AP English Lit.
Goverment/Econ.
Drama 2 or Marine Biology (Non AP/H)
Sport

Essays: (i kind of integrated the 3 topics below into my two essays)
1. when i was a freshman my parents got in an accident and i had to start taking care of my whole family. what i mean is that my chores got tripled, i needed to help my parents move through the house, and i had to walk my bro to school before i went. My school and his school are in 2 opposte directions.
2. how my parents accident coupled with my volunteering at the hospital and retirement has changed my outlook on life and how i found my true calling which is medicine because God has blessed me with intelligence and lots of empathy towards the needy and weak.
3. i also included in my essay a great quote from one of a famous surgeon (i am drawing a blank on his name right now) but it said " i was never the smartest in med school, but what i lacked in ability i made up with through discipline." i think this quote really applies to me and i explained why.

Hook: Family Accident as mentioned in Personal Statement

Location: CA- Instate advantage?

High School Type: Tier 4 (on the 1-10 API scale) dont i get a boost for attending a school whose tier is 1-4?

Ethnicity: White (More Specifically Mideastern but according to US Census form Mideastern is considered White)

Gender: Male

Extracurriculars:
Volunteer:
1. 100 hr. at local hospital
2. 100 hr. at orthodonist- i started doing this cause hospital was offering less hours and i wanted healthcare related work

Clubs/Sports:
1. 4 year NHS (Vice President 2010)
2. 4 year CSF
3. 4 year MESA
4. 4 year track and field (Captain, 4 year varsity, and 2 time league champ)

Awards:
1. 2008 League Champion
2. 2009 League Champion
3. 2008 most improved thrower

Work:
1. Paid Tutor at my High School

I think you have a very good chance at UC Davis. That plus you took a lot of APs and have a very convincing hook. The test scores are a little low, but your ECs make up for it. Good luck, I think you will be accepted.

chance me: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/957028-chance-please.html

Bump 10 Char

bump 10 char?

bump 10Char?

I am currently looking up some stats about davis… hold up a few minutes please!

Average ACT Scores for Davis:

Year Fall applicants Fall admits Fall enrollees
2009 25.5 27.3 25.6
2008 25.3 26.7 24.9

And GPA (weighted):

Year Fall applicants Fall admits Fall enrollees
2009 3.72 3.99 3.84
2008 3.69 3.94 3.79

So, your ACT is okay, but your GPA may haunt you.

sorry the spacing is a little messed up…

Don’t you think the adcoms will find it weird that your essay is about how you want to go into medicine and yet you aren’t majoring in a) anything related to medicine, and b) anything that you’ve shown interest in through schoolwork or extracurriculars? If I were you, I would put Biology, or, if you really are afraid it will be too competitive, put undecided.

jdiehold: medical schools dont care what major you are as long as you just complete the 5 premed series:
Intro bio
G-chem
O-chem
Intro physics
Calculus (for some)

and the reasoning behind it is that to get accepted to the college of L+S is easier than the college of biology

bump 10 char

bump 10 char? anybody?

I hate to give this thread an abrupt turn, but why not consider some private schools with great med programs, that will rely less on stats and weight what you have experienced more? In my personal opinion, you have achieved so much despite your obstacles, but what if UC Davis simply judges you on your GPA…
Maybe if you retake your Sat, it’ll make up for the gpa…

I know for a fact that UCD places a huge emphasis on GPA…and that is confirmed by the fairly high GPAs of recent admits posted above by bsmd11. I’m not sure that your 3.55 UCGPA is going to be enough =/.

I agree with nil desperandum that you might want to look at some other schools in case UCD doesn’t work out.

You’re boarderline probably around 40-50% chance

bump 10 char

any chance for more opinions?
