Chance to Pratt please?

I would hate to be annoying, but I'm genuinely interested in some of your opinions (especially current Duke students). I have generally good numbers but very weak EC's and would like to study Biomedical Engineering.

SAT I: 2400 (superscored), 2350 (800 W, 800 CR, 750 M) (not superscored)
ACT: 34
SAT II: 800 Math II, 780 Chemistry
GPA: ehh our school does this a little differently i think, 5.3 is the highest (weighted), and I have a 5.1
Rank: school doesn't rank
AP: taking all AP's this year (have consistently been taking the most rigorous course load)
Awards: several music awards in piano, Harvard Book Prize Award, school awards in Mathematics and English, NHS, National Merit Commended

Extracurriculars: Math Club (local competitions), Key Club, and a couple other less significant clubs (school magazine, yoga, help at nursing home)
music: section leader for local/state-wide orchestras, competitions
Job/Work Experience: teach and mentor flute, babysit
Volunteer/Community service: volunteer at hospital, church, library

I'd appreciate any comment! Thanks!!

You have a pretty good chance I’d say. If you can still improve your app, just try concentrating on just one or two of your EC’s and really improving them so it looks like there is something your have teh passion for.

please chance me here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1024234-chance-me-if-you-dont-like-when-people-title-threads-all-capitals.html

I applied to Trinity ED but looking at your scores, your CR and writing are definitely above the middle fifty percent of pratt students’ stats. Your SAT I math score is on the low side but your SAT II math compensates for that. I think you have a solid chance, you just have to demonstrate interest in math/science in your essays - I think that what Guttentag said in some admissions video - good luck man!

Are you applying ED? That would be another booster.

You have good standardized test scores. I don’t think you mentioned whether you’re a male or female, but being a girl would probably also be a plus if you’re applying to Pratt.

Thanks for the prompt replies!
I’m basically wondering how much high scores can compensate for a lack of EC’s at schools like Duke.
@4everyoung, no I’m applying RD, and yes I am a girl, so I’m happy to know that I have that advantage at least haha

I have heard that Pratt puts a much higher emphasis on numbers than Trinity, of which yours are the best they can be. As long as your essays and recommendations are good I would say your chances are great. Duke uses a six area system in which each area has an equal weight. These areas are: Class rigor, grades, test scores, recommendations, essays, and extracurriculars. Extracurriculars are only one part, and yours seem decent enough so as not to hurt you too much.

Being a female and applying for engineering helps a ton. Your scores are excellent, and as mentioned, Pratt is very scores based. If you can show some more interest in one or two of your ECs you have very good chances.

Thank you so much for your insight, shark2810 and NCBoy1! you’re all making me very optimistic haha
I’m pretty sure I have shown passion for music, but that’s not necessarily an eyebrow-raising EC.
the frustrating thing is, I had applied ED to Cornell, but since then, I have slowly began to gain interest in Duke. I’m sure I would be happy at both, but I can’t say I’d particularly mind if Cornell didn’t accept me and Duke did, but that would be very unlikely. …ugh now I feel guilty, like I’m betraying Cornell :frowning: ahh 4 more days

No!! I was so excited I finally found another girl interested in BME at Duke!!
:frowning:
So lonely…

Almost 50% of BME’s at Duke are female at the beginning. Trust me. It’s not that lonely. You’ll be fine. BME has the highest percentage of females nationwide as it appeals to that gender moreso than other engineering disciplines for some reason. I believe Pratt undergraduate is about 40% female overall, twice the national average of 20%. Again, that female presence is larger in BME than the other engineering major at Duke.

Applying as a female to Pratt helps a little bit, but it’s not a huge hook like it is at other engineering schools since there are plenty of qualified female applicants. And, yes, I’ve also been told that Pratt admissions is more “predictable” and “numbers-based” than Trinity so if you have a high SAT/GPA especially in math and science, you should be in good shape.

And whoever said a 750 is at the low end for the Math SAT, while that may be true, it’s only like 3 questions wrong total - I wouldn’t be too concerned. Plus, the OP said she got an 800 on the Math another time, so that overrides it plus the 800 on Math IIC. So, you’re in good shape. I’d say you have a solid chance. Good luck!

ahah sorry 4everyoung, but like bluedog said, you’ll be fine
thanks bluedog!
the SATs were taken twice, and the 750 was with 2 wrong, annoyingly enough
