I'm in a somewhat unique situation. I attend an early college high school, so I'll be graduating high school the same time I graduate CC with an associates in science. My high school class only has sixty people however, all very competitive. I'm in the top 15% but I'm pretty sure climbing to top 9% will be impossible. I'm interested in both geosciences and studio art, but focusing on science for now.
So, high school info..

Texas resident, weighted gpa 4.7/6.0 (this will raise when I complete my college courses this coming school year) and unweighted gpa 3.97/4.00
Extracurriculars: founder of philosophy club, president of art club, just elected senior class vice president, band. Volunteer work includes 30+ hours at a living history museum, some work at elementary school nearby, and some plans for the summer will add to this.
Many teachers have voiced the fact that they are impressed with my work, I know I have good sources for ref letters.
The high school is also a texas science, technology, engineering, and mathematics academy (t-stem) so I have a ton of unique coursework, including technology, engineering, and geoscience courses.
My sat scores weren't fabulous, which makes me nervous. How much do they look at scores if the gpa is good? I would like to take the sat a second time but the next available date is in October, and I was hoping to apply in August. Would it be worth waiting to apply to retest?

I completed thirty-six college hours in dual credit and classes on CC campus, and will complete the remaining hours my senior year of high school. I know more than thirty of these hours will transfer based on the online guide. I'll be talking to an advisor Thursday, but I'm incredibly nervous and would like to be more informed. UT is my #1 choice ah, I'm just in love with Austin.

*thank you to anyone who offers advice and opinions, I appreciate it!

I’m more interested in knowing how good of a chance I have, I talked to an advisor on the phone and figured out how my college credit will transfer…

I think you will still get in. If you move up a little in class rank you should be okay. I have a friend who was in the top 25% who got in. Although I’m curious, what is you intended major? Because it’s not really difficult persay to get into UT but it is tough to get into the major you want.

I’m primarily interested in geosciences, specifically environmental science and sustainability. However I am sure I seem ridiculous because I would like to double major in this and studio art. But as I said, putting science first for now. Was your friend in state?

From my understanding, SAT scores are very important for an applicant that is not in the top 9%. Only two of my friends that were not auto admits got into UT. One scored around 2000 and the other around 2100 on the SAT.

I’m not sure how difficult the admission process is for the Geoscience majors.

My friend was in state admission. But he also had like a 31 act so that definitely helped. But since you’re going for geosciences, I’d say it shouldn’t be too hard to get into it. If I’m not mistaken that’s in the college of natural which is one of the easier schools/colleges to get into.

Geosciences actually fall under the Jackson School of Geosciences, Koalaballa. Not sure how competitive is it though. Good luck, QuartzAntler!

[Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin](http://www.jsg.utexas.edu/)

I’m currently in the Jackson School at UT myself. Although I’m afraid I don’t know much about undergraduate admissions, I certainly recommend the department!

Side note: Don’t worry too much about having to “choose” science or art. One of my closest friends had a studio art degree for undergrad, and is just finishing a master’s here in the geology department, while in the process of opening her own papermaking business. Keep your options open!

I definitely have some work to do on improving my SAT scores. I really regret not taking it earlier, I would have preferred the chance to take it more than twice before app deadlines ugh.

Thanks so much everyone, this is all really helpful! Now I just wonder how competitive Jackson admissions are.

Does anyone know about how updating scores after submitting an application works? I have my scores from the July SAT, but I’m planning to take it again in October. I went to an info seminar and asked about this, they said we were welcome to submit updated scores after initially sending the app. Just… didn’t explain how to do so.
