Chance + UK Creative Student = Love + Tea = British Tea

Hey,

I am currently a UK Student and I have been thinking about attending a Film, Art or Media School in America. Preferably California because I heard they have amazing internships for creative students. I want to study anything that combines Creativity and Business – Creative Producing, Creative Events Management and Entertainment Management etc. But I have skills in graphic design, filming and screenwriting.

I have been looking at –

Chapman University Dodge College of Film and Media Arts
California Institute of the Arts
USU School of Cinematic Arts

If you know anymore that right my description, I am open to suggestions.

Stats
• ACT: Hoping to achieve between 29 – 32
• SAT Subject Tests: Planning to take Literature, but not sure yet.
• GPA-UW/W: We don’t do these in the UK and I don’t exactly understand it.
• Rank: Our school placed students in different groups depending on academic ability. I was placed in the middle group, but ranked top in all my creative and business classes.
• AP/IB classes: Not really sure what this is but I have…

Diploma in Creative & Media Level 2

(Please note my core GCSE results are not included. I don’t think I am going to submit them because I am going to take the ACT’s test anyway. I also have no idea how I am going to include these in the application, Common Application isn’t exactly International Student “friendly”)

• Teacher Recs: Already talked to my Creative & Media teachers, seeing as they have been teaching me for five years and have witnessed my creativity since I was twelve – the recs should be excellent.

• Counsellor Rec: The counsellor absolutely loves me, he has also taught me for four years. So the Counsellor rec should be impressive as well.

Bumpty Bump

Would really love feedback, US and UK time-zones are different so I would have to stay up all night to even see a reply.

Seeing as how the American and British school systems are diffirent, i can’t judge your entry chances on academics. However, you seem like a creative student and your EC’s help valdate that. You have a solid shot, but remember that the international pool is competitive

Hey Jay,

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully the Universities I am going for doesn’t get a lot of students who want to study in my sector, (haha) I am joking but hopefully I’ll get a decent shot at each Uni.

Don’t know much much about those colleges, though I do believe they weight the your portfolio more than your SAT scores.

Here is a quick way to estimate your GPA, which is the averages of your course grades

An all A student is a 4.0
A- Student would be a 3.7
B+ is a 3.3 etc

If you get an A in a class and a A- in another, the GPA of those classes is a 3.85 (the average)

APs and IBs are basically college level classes, which I don’t think your school offers, though if your generally taking the hardest classes your school offers, your ok.

Hey Tappman,

Thanks for the reply. I think I’ll leave the Colleges to calculate my GPA as it doesn’t apply to my school or any other British (education system) school in the UK. I received an email from Chapman saying they will calculate corroding to their “special” International UK Student system, so I’ll see how that goes.

Overall, I am pretty much looking to fall back on my EC’s and my Creative, Business subjects.

Just calculated my GPA. It’s 3.8.

What do you guys think in terms of getting in and receiving a scholarship?

I think you have a good chance of getting in. Cal Arts is a great school (Tim Burton alum  ). I’d say you have a great chance, but since the school systems are so different, it is very hard to estimate. Good luck :)

Thanks for the reply, SillyStokey. I really hope my application is successful and I get in, I would love to study in America. Specifically California.

Anyone else have input?

Please and Thank you

It’s difficult for me to judge, just because I’m not familiar with UK education systems, but you seem like a brilliant applicant. Your ACT could afford to be a bit higher, but it’s outweighed by the creativity evident in the rest of your application. I know you have your heart set on California, but New York is also a great place to bring together business and art. You could try looking into some schools like NYU if you’re interested, depending on your financial situation.

With all of your features adding up, the only thing working against you is being an out-of-state applicant, which only works against you for some schools. You seem like the kind of person any college would be lucky to have on their campus. Best of luck.

sorry, i dont know anything about these schools

No probs, thanks for posting though. It bumped my topic, haha. Thanks for the reply Diva, I am sure I’ll do good on my ACTs but I haven’t been done anything academic for a long time.

Bumpty bump, any more people willing to give their input?
