my description of myself:
i am very math/science orientated.... as you can see from my low verbal and economic scores.

here are the lists of the colleges im applying to.... wut are my chances???

1st choices: Caltech, MIT, Harvey Mudd
2nd choices: U of Michigan- Ann Arbor, U Texas- Austin
Safe choices: Illinois tech, Clarkson U

You can pretty much forget about Caltech and MIT. They have too many internationals with perfect SAT scores and perfect grades applying. But your chances at the other schools are ok. Michigan and UTA are matches (mainly because of your SAT verbal) and Illinois Tech and Clarkson are safeties. Why aren't you applying to Purdue as a safety?

i think that i am already applying to too many places...
u see my school is a british curriculum and most people from my school apply to england... which the application process is very simple as they all use a common application througout the whole country

btw i heard that purdue has bad social life and a not very nice campus

my first language is thai and my school follow the british curriculum... which is think explains my low verbal score.

i relli dont see how my low verbal score will affect my college study since i can speak listen read and write fluently... but plz feel free to comment if im wrong

I agree that since English is not your first language and since you are understand enough to keep up, your verbal score on the SAT should not hurt your chances too much. But with schools that are as small and as in-demand as Caltech and MIT, there is almost no margin for error. So if any part of your application hurts you, chances are, you will not be admitted.

And yes, Purdue is not the best place to go from a social point of view...then again, neither are Caltech or Harvey Mudd.

ok thx for ure opinion... ill inform u whether i get accepted or not... i will know by april for most univs

I'm not so sure Michigan is a match. I'm saying that not because of your low SAT-v, but your IB score at 36 points is rather mediocre for top universities like Michigan. Btw, what is Thai B? Is that your second language?

On the other hand, I don't understand the choices of Illinois Tech and Clarkson as safety. Surely you can do better than that. Purdue would be a good alternative. The application is simple and the decision is quick. You are right about the social life though.

Thai B is my first language... but i take english A1 instead of Thai A1 because it might look better in my application to have taken a higher level of english

36 points for IB is very bad for me... as you can see my economics score is pulling down my total points... and u have to + bonus points too.. which i already got an A for TOK

for my backups, i thought clarkson and illinois tech would be easier to get in than purdue...

has purdue deadline passed???? any other good backups u would recommend??? take clarkson and illinois tech out perhaps??

doesnt u mich have a high acceptance rate?? if it is then i wont worry too much about backups

Anonamous, Purdue's deadline is March 1. I definitely recommend you apply. Purdue is a top 10 Engineering school with an international reputation. Illinois Tech and Clarkson aren't nearly as good. Socially, Purdue is not that great. But it is a school with 40,000 students, many of which are international. You can easily find a niche for yourself.

As far asd Michigan's acceptance rate, yes it is high, but that does not mean it is not selective. The average admitted student has a 1380 on the SAT (and rising) and a 3.9 unweighed GPA (basically a straight A student). I think you have a decent chance, but not a good one. Like I said, Michigan is a match for you. And Goblue makes a good point...anything under a 40 on the IB is low by Michigan standards, so Michigan could actually be a slight reach for you.

ok i will probably apply to purdue as the deadline hasnt passed. thx alot alexandre u've been a great help

Michigan puts more weight on grades rather than test scores. For internationals, they'd consider more on how you performed at public exams like IB and GCSE.

Since your school follows the British curriculum, I presume you sat for GCSE or O-Level prior to IB Diploma. If you did very well on GCSE, it would help your chances.

It's much easier to get into Purdue than Michigan. I believe you have a good shot getting into engineering with your strong math and science scores.

The application is quite simple (no essay) and usually you can get a decision in 4-6 weeks.

I believe that the ability to comprehend difficult material quickly and efficiently is important in any academic area, be it science or english. Although your math score is top notch, your verbal score shows that you cannot comprehend basic passages. This will really hurt you because there is a lot of reading involved for science courses.

CCRunner, I don't think that will be a problem for the OP. His verbal score is on the low side, but it is still equal to the average American score. His English is probably not great, and as such, he will have to compensate with more time behind those books, but I have seen many internationals with weaker English scores do well in University. My own sister got about a 440 (in 1987, which is equaivalent to a 520 today) on the Verbal section of the SAT and she graduated from Georgetown with a 3.8 GPA.

GoBlue yes i did IGCSE.

IGCSE Math A and A* for retest ( i finished it a year ahead of schedule on an accelerated course, but then retake to get a better grade )
IGCSE Physics A
IGCSE Chemistry A
IGCSE English C
IGCSE English Literature C
IGCSE Geography C
IGCSE IT A
IGCSE Business studies B

After i finished my IGCSE math accelerated program i did the A/S level, from the cambridge curriculum. i attained grade A (top grade is A, not A*)

How do these scores look in comparison with u mich other applicants. Is there a policy (like MIT) that can replace SAT verbal with toefl. Also, i applied a week before the deadline for fall semester (I applied a week before Feb. 1st ). Please give me feedback, U mich is probably my best realistic choice, since caltech and MIT as u mentioned are mere impossible for me.

If my chances at u mich (or UT A) looks good enough i will not apply to purdue.

You really are borderline. Your math and science results are good...but your English and social science (Economics and Geography) results are consistantly average by Michigan standards. Your chances for UTA and Michigan are not "good". They are decent, but they are by no means good. I would definitely apply to Purdue.

ok thx alot alexandre. btw wut does the "moderator" thing below ure name mean?

It just means that I assist the administrators of this website with making sure posters behave appropriately.

ahh ok... so if u were to give me a percentage that you think i will be accepted to umich or UTA what would it be. for example: 30% chance of acceptance, etc..
