Chance would be Awesome

Hey guys, my friend wants a chance, here it goes:

Asian male, out of state/international

Top 100 high school, very competitive
Class Rank: top 20% out of ~600 students
UW GPA: 3.6
Weighted GPA: 4.8
SAT Superscore: 2280 (740 Math, 740 Reading, 800 Writing)
-Separate scores: (740 M, 740 R, 700 W) + (660 M, 720 R, 800 W)
ACT Score: 33 (34 english, 35 math, 34 reading, 29 science, 32 english/writing, 9 on essay)

National Merit Commended Scholar (214 on PSAT)
AP Scholar with Honor
State awards for business competition/musical performance
District award for tennis

Good ECs (Vice President of two organizations, treasurer of another)
Good, but not stellar recommendations
Good, but not stellar essays

Well, he’s definitely got a chance. Were he in-state, he’d have absolutely no problem, but applying OOS is ALWAYS difficult. That said, you marked “out of state/international.” Depending on the country he’s from, that would be an advantage. Maybe not a HUGE advantage, since he’s Asian, which is always the largest minority, but still some.

Overall, maybe a 50-70% chance. His scores are good, but his ECs, essays, and recs seem pretty average for a Michigan applicant, which could push him closer to a 50/50 coinflip.

Looks like what I got and I was admitted OOS for whatever that’s worth

your grades are pretty low, especially for OOS (they typically want a 3.8 for INSTATE). I’d say high reach/low match.

He has a 4.8 weighted…his gpa is fine

Michigan doesn’t look at weighted and a 4.8 could be not even that good depending on the school (every weighted system is different). They only care about unweighted. A 3.6 is extremely low for UW at U of M. It doesnt make it impossible, but certaintly unlikely

stewa, Michigan looks at the strength of the school and course schedule. I know that a 3.3 GPA from some schools that are known for being extremely tough is usually enough to get a student into Michigan and some Ivies.

At any rate, in the age of Naviance, I do not understand why one needs to ask for chances. I am 100% sure that the OP’s naviance page for his school has a well-established track record for how students with his credentials fared. Of course, Michigan has gotten a lot harder in the last couple of years, but he can at least ascertain whether or not 3.6 students from his school usually get in.
