Your credientials are certainly very impressive and glad you’re making use of the creative art submission give your focus on music. That’s a great way to help us better evaluate your talent in that particular realm.

Curious as to why you’re taking one IB class senior year. Is the IB diploma offered at your high school? If it is and you’re not enrolled in it, you may want to let us know why since we do encourage students to make use of the IB diploma where available.

We always caution any student to remember that W&M is selective admitting only 27% of the out-of-state students who apply so even those incredibly strong academics like yourself should remember that we make some tough decisions and cannot admit all of the wonderful students who apply to us. For more on any applicant’s chances, check out our Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs Chance Me](http://blogs.wm.edu/2010/12/14/chance-me/))

My school does offer IB diploma, but in order to follow that path I would have had to drop a music class. With that in mind, I decided to pursue AP classes. However, my school does not offer AP French 5, so I took IB French 5 and IB French 6 instead of Honors French 5 and AP French 6.

That information will be pertinent to your application. You can place it in the additional information section of the Common Application. We appreciate being able to understand a student’s curricular choices.

Unfortunately, I have already submitted my application to William & Mary… Do you have any suggestions as to how I can convey this information to the admissions committee?

You can simply mail or email the information to us and ask that it be added to your file. Please place your W&M Student ID Number (sent to you in the email we sent confirming receipt of your Common Application) on whatever you send. You can mail it to:

Office of Undergraduate Admission
PO Box 8795
Williamsburg, VA 23187-8795

Fax it to 757-221-242

or email it to admission@wm.edu as the body of the email and not as an attachment (we don’t open attachments by policy to protect ourselves against a virus).

you will get way more credits at W&M with those AP classes than you would with the IB Diploma, so that is a plus (W&M is not the only school like this, but it is strange that the admissions offices at many schools like IB so much, yet AP gets way more credit).

Soccerguy, while you are correct about credit awarding, remember admission and credit awarding are two very different things. W&M does not focus on AP/IB exam scores for admission. We focus on rigor of curriculum.

Generally, the IB diploma is considered the most rigorous program a high school student can take because of the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay parts of the program. These include in-depth research and advanced critical thinking skills that are similar to college classes. Additionally, the breadth and depth of the IB curriculum (breadth in terms of the broad base of classes, depth in terms of two-year courses) are a good fit for a liberl arts curriculum. So while we realize it’s disappointing for IB students to possibly receive less credit, most students still plan to spend four years in college so the number of credits earned should take a back seat to what admission offices look for.
