Chance?

Hey guys,

I was just curious about how my chances are for getting into Harvey Mudd. Applying for Electrical Engineering.

How do my grades/ec's look?
- gpa shows noticeable improvement from freshman to junior year
Approximate GPA's:
- 9th: 3.75 (uw) / 4.20 (w)
- 10th: 3.85 (uw) / 4.65 (w)
- 11th: 3.92 (uw) / 4.85 (w)
- Sophomore year AP's: AP Physics B
- Junior year AP's: AP Physics C (EM & M), AP Calculus BC (with AB subscore), AP U.S. History, AP English Language, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science
- Senior year AP's (will take in Fall): AP Spanish, Ap Statistics, AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP Microeconomics, AP Physics (need class credit), AP English Literature

Most ap tests were 5's besides English... Always been strong in math & science... never great in English (Got a 3 in Lang...) lol.

EC:
- Currently an intern at CalTech. I help with research and the experiments. Research supports my passion for math/science and I am actually doing research/helping with the group.
- Tae Kwon Do for 11 years (instructor with 6 years of competition experience)
- 13 years violin; member of orchestras for 7 years
- Physics Bowl Captain
- Science Bowl Captain
- Rubik's Cube Club (~10 second 3x3 solve time)

How do my test scores look?
- SAT I (R/M/W): 640/790/620
(Only took this once. Did not study. Planning to take September ACT.)
- SAT II (All taken in one seating and in this order. Scores seem to have a decreasing trend... Got tired during the physics subject test...):
- Chemistry: 790
- Math IIC: 770
- Physics: 710

Didn't take any physics classes before taking tests. I took them as a self-assessment/out of curiosity. lol.

Thank you for any and all insight! Really appreciate it!
- Kevin

That’s a lot of APs, and not just compared to the 4 that I took. Can’t imagine anyone would be dissatisfied with them.
I imagine that the admissions people are interested in volunteer work or something similar, as an indicator of humility, responsibility, etc, which Tae Kwon Do instructor fits. Elaborate on the instructor job or captain’s responsibilities to let them know what was involved. (In the ECs section of the common app)
The SAT I scores are reflective that you did not study
If I took the ACT, I would look at stats profiles to see what I should aim for.
Critical reading and writing are not the focus at Harvey Mudd, but they’re important for college and a scientific career.
Also, it helps to have correctly and well-written essays in your apps.

Alright. Thanks! I will keep that in mind. I plan to prepare a bit for the ACT. Hoping to bring that up to about a 2250 SAT equivalent. :/

And yeah, I have been told that great essays can really help a lot. Hoping for the best! haha.
