Hey guys, I know that you can’t predict my chances exactly, but I’d just like some feedback.
As a freshman and sophomore in high school, I was friends with the wrong kids and had some pretty bad grades. Nothing astronomically bad, but definitely some high C’s were made. I turned it around my junior year, though, making new friends and maturing a lot.
My grades junior year were definitely Bates material, and my grades this year are even better (all low or high A’s in 4 ap’s and honors German).
I also have a good ACT for Bates, and honestly really stellar extracurriculars that could probably pass muster at more selective schools.
I’m just wondering if you guys think that my grades in the beginning of high school will really ruin my application, or if the holistic admissions process at Bates might work in my favor? I had a good interview and visit, and am planning on applying ED.
Thanks so much!
You can’t change the past, but you can give the future your best try. The only way to make sure you will not be accepted is not to apply. Apply! Maybe your guidance counselor can speak about your growth over time. An upward trend is better than a downward one.
@henrywinter Bates puts a lot of value in interviewing on campus if you can and Skype or similar if you can’t. Deans conduct the interviews. If you have a story to tell this one school where you should. Bates will accept kids that want to go, that is why the yield is so high.
You sound like a good candidate. Hopefully you had good teacher recs. It’s good that you think your interview went well. They care about interest. Good luck!
My son (currently a Bates student) had a lackluster freshman year in HS. His grades improved greatly each year.
He had strong extra curricular activities and a varsity sport. Definitely an upward trend in grades is desired.
Have your guidance counselor help you.
