essay's are average/above average
above average recs

national honor roll, who's who among US High School students, and a bunch more of all that jazz

i'm worried about the sats
any chance or will they totally throw the application out with such low scores?

I'm amazed that your verbal score SAT and writing scores are so low, given the essay you posted in another thread. To be honest, it makes me wonder if you wrote it yourself.

Your stats are indeed low for Tufts, as backed by this:

http://admissions.tufts.edu/admstat.htm

However, Tufts is one of the few very competitive schools that will give ED applicants a break on stats if they show they have really investigated Tufts, show enthusiasm about attending and becoming active members of the Tufts community, backed by superduper ECs, recommendations and essays. Your "why Tufts" essay for ED is going to be crucial. Make sure it is sincere. If you can do this, I would certainly not rule you out.

PS: National Honor Roll and Who's Who are garbage awards. Don't include them on your application.

jjsmom, you do not have to be that rude. you could have said better than that, and i reckon you are a mature woman then why don't you act like one? (based on your SN)

His stats are low, but everyone has a shot at any college.
Are you one of the adcoms at Tufts? or did you even at least attend the University? if not, don't be so rude, and I really don't see that you have anything to back yourself. seriously.

I don't think National Honor Roll and Who's Who are garbage awards. I think you.......(i will not finish my sentence, but I will leave it to your little imagination)

Include everything that you think is worth putting down on your app and resume.

things such as "played PS2 for many years and won against every kid in my school" are garbages. not those. they are indeed very honorable.

i did write the other essay myself. I tend to have time issues however. I have never been a great test taker all throughout highschool. That has been the parts of classes that have gotten me a B+ instead of a A. I took 2 prep courses on SATs and they hardly helped. I'm not sure what my problem is but i did write the essay myself. Thanks very much again jjsmom. It's just been very discouraging for me to be applying to these types of places with low sat scores. I know it puts me in the lower tier of the pool. After looking at the website, i see that i'm almost 200 points off the mean range however. I did not know the fact of letting the sats slide if ED is completed. Are my EC's superduper? They seem alright to me, nothing amazing though. My recs are amazing and my essays are good. Are the ec's superduper?

sorry to say but your ECs aren't that amazing, however, they are worth putting down. so go for it. don't be discouraged.

when will you be applying to Tufts in your entire life? only ONCE. and tranfer admission is tougher than freshman.

you only have one chance in your life, so why don't you just shoot it out there? your stats are good except your SAT scores...

If you were a junior, i would highly recommend you to do some extraordinary ECs...

look at mine, my ECs are not GREAT but they are alright, and i believe they are above the average and something unique. but if when you are applying to prestigious schools like Tufts, there are tens of students with excellent ECs...

dude, don't worry, go for it

thanks, might as well, right.

I don't know about superduper, but your ECs are good.

I am not the world's best test-taker (also due to time constraints) so I definitely feel your pain. If I were you, I would explain the circumstances in the "other" section of the application (although you may have sent it off already, in which case I would consider mailing them a supplemental letter--a relatively short one though--explaining your difficulties with time constraints and how that has affected your testing). Don't get your hopes too high up but don't feel that you don't have a chance at all either. The college admissions game is tricky and unpredictable- you never know if it will work in your favor or against you. The numbers given online are the mean range- not the overall range. This means that 25% of the applicants were actually scoring numbers below the range. 25% is a lot if you think about it.

I hope that helps =) Good luck!

thanks a lot juliatorgo.....actually i haven't sent it off yet...i'll do that as part of my optional essay...add a little part in...thanks a bunch

I didn't think I was being rude, but if I sounded that way then I apologize to mleafs.

National Honor Roll and Who's Who are given to anyone who will pay the fee to have their name included on the lists. They are well-known resume filler awards and the adcoms will discount them as such fluff. Including them makes the applicant look quite desperate for ECs.

Mleafs, I'm presuming you participated in each sport all four years of high school and that will indeed demonstrate dedication to your sports. Is that superduper? Well, as captain of two varsity sports teams, one each season, your ECs are just fine. I hope you played this up in that essay about your most meaningful EC. Do also mention photography as an important activity! It doesn't have to be school related if it is something about which you are passionate and dedicated for a while.

And yes Mleafs' stats are low but I also advised him to "go for it." I read his beautifully written essay, and as I advised him in an earlier thread, I have every confidence that with some tweaking he will be able to rewrite it with that same strong writing voice so that it will be appropriate as a personal essay. And yes, harsh as it may sound (sorry again if I sounded rude but you wanted truth and not sugar coating, right?) it just seems incongruous that his writing scores are so low given the strength of his demonstrated writing. No, I'm not an adcom, but in all materials my son and I reviewed regarding college essay writing, one of the red flags is when the strength of the essay doesn't match the writing stats, adcoms do question the integrity of the essay. They can sniff out essays that have been edited by professional college essay companies. That can definitely get your application thrown into the "deny" pile.

i can see where those awards are such....when i recieved one of the books I was surprised as to how many were in there. It really does have to do with time constraints. The only person I allowed to review my essay was a very close english teacher at my high school and he only gave suggestions. I hope this is not the case as to what happens to me. Thank you for the advice again. I'm not sure what it has to do with but I most certainly wrote my essay. Hopefully they will not think of this as such. I didn't think it was rude I just hope that it doesn't happen. Photography was high on my list, yes. Thank you once again jjsmom. And happy new year!

Another idea: do you have a portfolio of photographs that you could send along with your application? That would certainly make you and that essay memorable!!! I know Tufts accepts supplemental materials because my son sent in a performance CD. I know you're trying to get this all done immediately due to the deadline but perhaps you could quickly scan a few of your best shots and burn them onto a CD?

that's a great idea....yeah i could indeed do that. do i send it to the undergraduate admissions office?

All supplemental undergraduate application materials should be marked with your name, SS# and a note saying what it is that you're sending and why (e.g. "for your consideration as part of my early decision application to the school of liberal arts," or something like that) to:

SAT's aren't everything. I know people at Tufts that certainly didn't break 12 or 1300.

sat's aren't everything trust me. I got into some very good school and my act/sat score wasn't at all that impressive. As long as your essays and recs are good you will have a chance.
