Chance?

GPA: 91/100 unweighted
Rank: little less than top ten percent :(
SAT: 1210 (I'm retaking it...)
ACT: 28
Classes: AP Bio, AP Lit, AP Lang, Spanish 4, Latin I, AP Calc, AP Stats, AP Physics, SUPA econ, SUPA psychology, Advanced Zooogy/Human Anatomy, took a sociology course over the summer at Lemoyne,

ECs: 1200 hours at an ambulance, took a four month class and became a NYS Certified First Responder, volunteer at two different hospitals about 120 hours, NHS, NYS Business and Marketing honor society, went to Barnard college/ Columbia Young Women's Leadership program, Math League, member of a premed lecture program , Frontier of Science at SU, won the RPI medal (a $60,000 scholarship for excellence in math and science), Spanish Club, Ski Club, Track, National Shakespeare competition, Student Senate, high honor roll every marking period of HS.
There are some other ECs that I can't think of and aren't important.

My Ecs rock but my SAT scores suck... hopefully they will go up when I retake them. Traditionally only kids in the top 2% of my HS get in... (and I already know of a few kids that have a higher rank than me applying... my HS is huge on rank). This makes me super nervous. So academically I don't think I rank well enough to get in, or do I? or do my ECs compensate for it? I don't know I just need some outside opinions.

Will applying ED help my chances? I think that is what I want to do because this is my first choice school and I want to go sooooooo bad... I love U of R.

you should be okay
your gpa will be fine so i wouldn't worry about rank too much. really try when you retake those SATs though!! i am assuming that you posted math + cr. you still have a good shot with those scores, but try to do better next time =)

ED will help your chances, yeah. don't hope on getting financial aid though. my friend who applied ED had much higher stats and achievements than i did, but didn't get any merit awards whereas i got $9,500/ year.
however, ED admits get a free sweatshirt but regular kids only get a tshirt. hahah
make sure you write your essay about something that makes you stand out. DEFINITELY schedule an interview, this is possibly the most important thing for you to do right now.

if you have any other questions, feel free to pm me =)

I think you should have a pretty good shot (~70%) on getting in.

nice things about rochester is that sats in the big equation of admissions is only a small part. you have much going for you in terms of ecs and grades which is what Rochester wants, uniques individuals who can contribute to the college community. if you can increase your SATs it'll definitely help and also might get you some more merit aid. my sats were only a little higher than yours but I got in with a partial scholarship, so you should be fine. let me know if you have questions as well.

Try to schedule an interview to calm your nerves..Honestly, I think you have a very nice shot. (Your ECs are kick ass, and your rank is still quite lovely.)

wow everyone thanks for the replys! I will def. schedule that interview and I need the financial aid so I guess I'll wait it out and apply RD. I'm retaking the SATs this fall so this summer I'll studystudystudy! Are all you guys students of U of R? I'm thinking of going premed (haha kind of obvious from my ECs) and I know u of r is a great school for the becuase of strong. but i mainly want to go there just cause i love the whole vibe and everything the school has to offer. if you guys are students how do you like it? ...what do you not like?

hey stephrad21, I'm a rising junior at the UofR. If you have any specific questions let me know.

Things I like:
academic flexibility (interdepartmental majors, no gen ed requirements, easiness to double major etc)
research opportunities
amazing professors,
eastman
small campus

things i don't like
weather
food
exorbitant loans for ridiculous tuition
yearly tuition increase

i've heard people complain about the Rochester area a lot. I'm from Syracuse and from my experience Rochester is just a much much nicer Syracuse, there is more to do and the overall quality of living and everything is just nicer. However, now I'm considering Fordham as well because its in NYC. From an outsider standpoint I wouldn't think there is really anything to complain about with Rochester. However, I hate Syracuse... a lot. There is never anything to do/anywhere to go and there are a lot, a lot of scummy houses/areas. I'm not nessecarily loooking for a big change in setting but just a change (...an upgrade) would be great. How do you like the Rochester area?

I'm not a huge fan of the Rochester area. I find downtown Rochester to be slightly sketchy for traveling by foot. You can be on one part of a street and feel perfectly safe, and then just a little ways up start to feel nervous and twitchy at your surroundings. My roommate and I were actually followed on a main street next to Eastman. This being said there are nice-ish down town areas, but I didn't feel a real college town atmosphere.

Like InsaneMembrane says, the food is terrible. I eat a lot of cereal.

In terms of finances, Rochester took away the non merit financial aid it offered me every time I got another outside scholarship. I found it severely disheartening that I couldn't use outside awards to help lessen my loans. Its also quite cute the way Rochester feels the need to increase it's already ridiculous price.

This being said, the best part about Rochester is the loose "open" curriculum. I like the fact that I don't have general requirements to fulfill.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
