Chance

I promised myself not to do one of these chance threads, but just could not resist the temptations. So here goes.

Rank: 3/511
My rank from first semester of freshman year jumped in the following order: 38 to 31 to 13 to 9 to 4 to currently 3.

SAT: 2320 (730CR, 790MATH, 800WR, 12Essay) Single sitting
SAT II: Only taken two so far, will take Physics in December. 800 Math II, 790 US History

EC: Don't feel like listing them all, but I got a bunch of good stuff like the Telluride Summer Program, stuff like that.

Essay: Don't want to talk about them either, but I feel very strongly about them, and plus, I wrote about things really important to my heart, thus too personal to judge.

Recommendations: Two of my best teachers in high school

Honors: A bunch like state gold medalist in Science Fair and State finalist in History Fair. AMC School winner, Intel entry, blah on and on.

Hook: I don't know if I have one. But really really really low income, passionate essays about my life, good scores I suppose, and rising rank because I have only been in the States for five and half years so a 38 rank in the beginning of high school should be forgiven.

Thanks for your time and comment. I appreciate it.

It's hard to chance you if you "don't feel like listing" all your ECs and awards or describing your essays. Those are the things that set you apart from the 20,000 other kids with 2320s and good class ranks.

From what you've given, I can only say that you have as good a chance as anybody.

according to numbers from the data bank of Collegeboard, only about 3800 kids in the United States score at or above 2320. If we include superscoring, probably a good thousand or more will be at that line. I work 38-40 hours a week during the school year for family reasons, so it's pretty hard for me to take friday nights and saturdays off to take these standardized exams, thus superscoring does not apply to me. I feel that this is what distinguishes me from the rest of the people who can just take these tests whenever they want- I take them when someone is willing to cover my shift.

Congrats, but you're not getting into Yale solely on the strength of your 2320 SAT score.

sorry guys, I didn't mean to brag or anything about SAT score. It's just that I disagreed with the previous comment about 20,000 people getting that score. I am only seeking some honest opinion. Thanks.

I don't think you're bragging... I got a better score than you.

But the fact of the matter is that we can't really tell you anything about your chances when you refuse to tell us critical information about your application.

Actually, in reality, I don't think we could tell you much anyway. The people who respond to these chance threads don't know anything that you don't, except maybe they've seen a few more chance threads than you have.

i'd love to give you as accurate a chance as i can, but we really do need to know more about your ECs and honors. There are lots of kids with good scores and class ranks. there are also a lot of kids who come from low-income families. i'm going to assume that your essay is something about how you've overcome the obstacle of your family's situation (please correct me if I'm wrong), but from what you've given us, you have as good a chance as anyone of getting into Yale.

Yeah, I don't really have anything constructive to say. But let's hope TASPers do well, yes?

Yeah, my point wasn't really about the number of kids with 2320s, it was what khaki said: all the other Yale applicants, for the most part, are going to have great scores too, and if you don't have anything else going for you then you're not going to get in.

Working 40 hours a week for family reasons is a big deal though and will definitely help your app.
