I am applying to Choate, Andover, Episcopal, and the Hill School, Mccallie
I got a low score on my ssat a 64% but i scored in the 83 % in reading i am retaking it again in December
I have all A's with an occasional B in the 6 and 7th grades
I do crew, wrestle, basketball, and run and i play football
I am president of my middle school and vice of NJHS
I am a good writer and have been published
I do not need FA but am still applying for it
I am a southener so im in the minority

im going to bump this

If you don’t need FA then why are you applying for it. That could take away funds from pupils who actually need it.

I meant a scholarship for merit in financil aid not for need based scholarships

You have a great chance. I have heard ssat scores are last on the list. Overall you seem well rounded with they ulimately look for.

everyone thinks that the ssat is the last thing on the list… im sorry it isnt
ppl got to understand, why they make u take the ssat in the first place. its used as a base of comparison like the real sat. it helps the school compare students academically. so in reality schools look at ur ssat nd grades first. b/c some schools are more competitve then others. don’t get me wrong kids with scores under 90 get in top schools but thats b.c they have good hooks like serious hooks, or wowed the school in the interview/essay

if they were considering accepting either of two applicants who were equal in ecs recs, grades then they would select the one with the higher ssat youre saying

If both were good, they would accept them both.

but they only have a certain amount of spots right
or do they just accept evrybody whos qualified?

They have a certain amount of spots but if 2 people are both very qualified they probably accept them. Admissions officer have been working for years at this type of situation and know exactly what they want and don’t want.

I don’t think ssat scores will make it or break it unless the scores are completely unreasonable. ( ex. 40 percent for Exeter… Not impossible but unreasonable)

Admission officers know if you are qualified and I’m guessing I’d you are above 50 percent ssat, which is the average prep school canidates score, you are in the ballpark for the lower tier schools.

They accept more than they can hold im guessing?

Not exactly. Referring to jyun : how is it possible to have the same stats when everyone has different interviews, talents, etc.? I never think that they would compare you to an applicant just like you because chances are if you are unique, no one will be like you. Also, how can ssat scores put you on the same level when every test is different month to month? ssats aren’t a fair way to completly judge one’s academic abilities. There are many variables to consider.

The SSAT is not really that fair b/c the words in vebal change

and remeber this is a chance thread

it is completely fair b.c its a test. i’m currently a student at exeter and I was accepted to andover, exeter, deerfield, and st pauls and i’m saying all of this out of personal experience. also to reply to latinlad i’m saying the most important thing when u apply is academics. I understand everyone is different but academics come first. golfkid i can c u are hoping ur sports will help u, it might. football definately helped me. but with a score like 64 i somewhat doubt ur chances unless u are amazing in one aspect. i have friend here who got admitted with a 68 ssat but that was mainly due to swimming where he is nationally ranked.

yeah i know that score basically shot my chances at HADES

not really just retake them… my friend got likea 50 his first time then got a 98

jyn12 what did u get on ur ssat. jw
