Chance

I got a 95 as a 10th grader

uhhh lets see

97 on verbal
75 on math (horrible considering im asian)
93 Reading

95 overall

I agree with jyun, and SSATs are very important.
Why? Because

  1. They predict what your PSAT and SAT scores will be, which is key because schools want to increase their averages. ( A minor reason )
  2. The SSAT is one of the only things that can’t be hyped besides interviews… Think about it
Recs can be hyped because of a teacher for x reason(s), Essays can be hyped, and although people think adcoms will detect it, they can’t detect everything especially if it does in a subtle way, grades can be inflated for a variety of reasons, ECs can be easily feigned
  3. SSAT essay measures your ability to write and think on your feet, which is essential in life.
  4. SSAT helps explain grades, (good and bad) for example
    Student 1-
    Straight A+s, in crappy public
    65% SSAT

Student 2- Low A, mid to high B, in a comp. public/private
96% SSAT
(Assuming all other variables are relatively constant)

Personally, I would go with student two, how about you? (No rhyme intended)

If SSAT wasn’t important, why pester people to make it?

The vocabulary isn’t really that hard people, if you put an effort into improving it, I mean there are main ways to do it.

  1. You’ve read a lot throughout your childhood (the educator-approved way of having a good vocab)
  2. You’re like me, who after discovering prep schools and learning about the facets of the app., you noticed there was an exam, and looked over the vocab and were like “I’m screwed” so you made a last ditch effort to buy test prep books and learned a lot of vocab and reinforced it all the time, thereby fabricating a good vocabulary.

Number 6 isn’t really a reason, but I’ve heard a lot of people complain about it.

ccer i think you are wrong on #4
if u get a bad ssat score but have all a’s it shows that youre a hard worker but not that smart

Also, after looking at some threads I have come to realize that it is not about the percentile (ie. 98%) on your SSAT (becuase that is what everybody puts on their chances.) It is about the actual score (ie. 790) becasue when take the SAT they don’t do anything about percentile but about the actual score. From now on people should put their actual score if what CCER99 says about #1 is true.

urbanflop –> I actually agree with you. I dont find it fair how, even though you do good on the SSAT (I got a 2043) they only use the percentile (54%, which sucks) to compare you to other candidates. I think the actual score is more important =]

ughh i really don’t feel like arguing but urbanflop from my personal experience and my friend’s i think u are wrong. ssat is an essential part of an applicant. i have a sbiling going through the same process rite now, (he also uses my ccc account) but feel free to message me and i’d gladly help someone out. joshbryon i realyl think u should really really retake the ssat. i’m saying this after i heard from an admissions officer UR PERCENTILE IS MORE IMPORTANT THEN THE ACTUAL SCORE.

also with the grades thing, ppl everyone comes from different schools. frankly some arre more competitve then others. BELIEVE IT OR NOT PPL I GOT ACCEPTED TO TOP SCHOOLS WITH 2 B’S OMGGG. my sibling currently is a straight a student or i think he has one b, but w.e yah if ppl have any questions feel free to mesage me

well, if you gei into the hill school at last, maybe we will be friends, because i am also applying for some schools, including the hill school and choate .and my current school ,nanjing foreign language school, is cooperating a program with the hill school, which means i have a extremely great chance to the hill school.

@jyun212 I actually got really good percentiles (98%) but I was just wondering why the actual score wouldn’t be important. If you say it’s the %tile that matters I guess I will listen because it doesn’t matter that much since both my score and percentile are really good.

Jyun –> Its actually too late for me to retake the SSAT :frowning: I live overseas, and there’s no time for the required materials to come in time, and the January SSAT is too late :frowning: So, I’m gonna have to stick with the score I got :(

urban flop yes that is so solidddd. you have to remeber the ssat is for comparison of the students applying. the schools want the top percentile b.c those = top students
