Chance?

<p>I'm a rising senior at a high school in VT... At first I was skeptical about staying in VT for college, but after touring the Middlebury campus, I would REALLY like to go there. I was wondering if had a chance at Middlebury? I want to be an English teacher, so I would be majoring in English, maybe even Creative Writing.</p>

<p>I'm a good student and extremely involved, but I'm (especially) worried about my test scores. What do you think?</p>

<p>GPA: 3.93ish unweighted
RANK: top 5% out of 130, part of a valedictorian group</p>

<p>APs:
-Junior Year: US History (3), English (3)
-Senior Year: I plan on taking Lit, Environmental, and Spanish (online), possibly also Stats</p>

<p>SATS: 1660 (ahh) --> CR: 530, Math: 480 (yikes), Writing: 610
(I know my SATs are terrifyingly ugly...I plan on taking them again but I'm not sure if I'm going to improve much)</p>

<p>SPORTS:
-JV field hockey 9, 10 (captain)
-Varsity field hockey 11, 12 (our school had our best record since 1982 and made it to the semifinals for the first time ever)
-Track & Field 9-11 (maybe 12)
-trying to start a girl's lacrosse team</p>

<p>EXTRA-CURRICULARS:
-Student Council member 9-12 (hopefully holding a leadership position this year) --> as a group, we've done numerous projects to raise student voice (dedicating lots of hours in doing so)
-Literary magazine 10-12 (editor 11-12)
-Newspaper 11-12 (we didn't have one until this year)
-National Honor Society 11-12
-Concert band 9-12 (section leader 11-12)
-Jazz band 11-12 (section leader)</p>

<p>COMMUNITY SERVICE:
-tutoring for Spanish
-volunteering at the public library's summer program for 5 years
-numerous activities through my EC's (organizing events for Student Council, playing at the Senior Center for band, running an Easter Egg Hunt for NHS, etc)
-volunteered at a summer camp
-I want to do another sort of project senior year, like starting a writing club in the middle school, but I don't know if I'll find the time</p>

<p>AWARDS:
-Field hockey Coach's Award (9)
-Spanish Book Award (9)
-Outstanding Student Award (9, 10) (based on academics and character in our class "teams")
-English Book Award (10)
-Rotary Youth Leadership Award (10)
-AP English Book Award (11)
-AP US History Book Award (11) (only person in the class to maintain an A average)
-Student of the Month (9, 10) --> based on our class "teams"
-Student of the Month (twice 11) --> Spanish and AP US
-Sugarbush (10, 11) --> for all students maintaining A-averages for at least 3 consecutive quarters</p>

<p>OTHER:
-I've worked as a counselor at a summer camp for 3 years
-interned for a quarter in a 6th grade classroom (teaching them about writing)
-interning for the summer at the local TV station (running video-making camps for kids)
-attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Award conference (grade 10)
-state-wide finalist for the UVM Essay Writing Contest (grade 10)
-published 4 times in the local newspaper (9-10)
-published in a state-wide writing and art anthology (10)
-published in our school's literary magazine (10-11)</p>

<p>I'm really close with almost all my teachers (and I'm a good student), so I'm guessing I'll have strong recommendation letters.
I'm also an identical twin (and have an older brother in college)...I don't know if that would come into play anywhere with financial aid.</p>

<p>Ah! Sorry about how lengthy this is! I'm sure I forgot some other things...I'm just really paranoid because all the schools I like (Middlebury, Bowdoin, Swarthmore, Amherst) seem like reach schools, especially with my test scores. I just don't know if I need to start looking in a different direction (I hope not). Any thoughts?</p>

<p>Thanks!!</p>

<p>I would suggest that you seriously consider some schools that don’t require any tests at all (for example, Bowdoin, Bates, Colby (?), Connecticut College) There’s a full list here:</p>

<p>[Optional</a> List | FairTest](<a href=“http://www.fairtest.org/university/optional]Optional”>ACT/SAT Optional List - Fairtest)</p>

<p>Your GPA is good and submit a piece of writing if you can. I wouldn’t submit your AP scores or SATs if you don’t have to. Good luck!</p>

<p>The schools you are looking at do put less weight on SATs than, say, the Ivies. However, as an unhooked applicant, you’ll want to bring them to around a 2000/2400 (or better). Teacher recommendations are very important at all of these schools, so that should definitely help you. Your EC’s look fine, and your class rank is good. You can certainly apply to all of the schools you mentioned, but make sure to add some safer schools to your list as well. Good luck w/ all of your applications, and by the way, I’m a twin too!</p>

<p>Agreed on test scores. Shoot for at least a 2000. It’ll be MUCH harder for you to get in with lower test scores, but it does happen. I wouldn’t take Middlebury off your list completely.</p>

<p>Are you planning to take SAT II’s? Some people do better on them than on SAT I’s and you can choose at Middlebury to submit SAT II instead of SAT I. It’s an approach to think about. But also check out Bates and others mentioned before. Trinity if not yet mentioned.</p>
