Chancellor's Nominee Scholarships

Does anyone know when U of Pitt will start notify the Chancellor's Nominee Scholarships?

In the past, the invite for the Chancellor came with the scholarship awards. You had a very short turn around time to write the essays and send everything back – it was like two weeks – someone else with a better memory will surely correct me if I am wrong :)

Is that a separate application, or is it a simply awarded based off your normal application (the one for simple admission to pitt)?

They award scholarships from the regular admission application. If you get a scholarship award, then you may get the invitation to apply for the Chancellor which is a separate application.

MTnest,

“In the past, the invite for the Chancellor came with the scholarship awards.”

Do you know when the scholarship awards will be notified?

Thanks!

I heard scholarship information comes 2 to 3 weeks after the acceptance letter

The scholarship letter came about 2 - 4 weeks after the acceptance. This was two years ago so I don’t know if their time frame has changed. I am sure we will get postings when those award letters start arriving :)

This is based on last year: The invitation to apply for the Chancellor’s scholarship arrives at about the same time that the merit scholarship letter arrives, which is not long (maybe two weeks) after acceptance. The Chancellor’s application is a pain in the fanny (but well worth it for winners). It requires additional essays and letters of recommendation and has a two-week turn around. My recommendation for anyone being asked to apply who is really interested in Pitt is to take the application very seriously and emphasize why Pitt is for you. There are only about 10 scholarships given and they are not necessarily given to those with the top numbers.

I do not know how long it takes to be invited to interview after the application is complete–DD did not get that call. I takes a while to hear (or figure out) that you are not getting the call. Ha.

Thanks for the info MD mom! Do you recall how many essays and letters of rec? I didn’t send any recs with my application, so this might be easier for me

I will find out.

I agree with everything said above except the part about saying why Pitt is best for you in the essays. That is good advise on most schools but I would say with the UHC that is probably a bad idea. I really don’t think they award these things based on interest or fit or perceived likelihood to attend. The essays have broader, more theoretical topics and the people I know who successfully competed addressed them as such. My advice would be to try to show how you are an interesting person with something to say. That is what they really care about. Anyways, just my two cents…

2 letters of rec
high school transcript necessary
3 500-word essay (1 obligatory and 2 choices out of 5)

Source: applying for it myself

Why do they need another high school transcript? Weak. But thanks for the info, very helpful :)

Do you think I could use basically the same letters of recommendation for the Chancellor’s app as my original application? I know that the UHC reviews the Chancellor’s apps where as the admissions office made the decisions and sent the original scholarships. And I think the fact that we have to submit a new transcript means the two are completely separate.

Also, do those letters of rec have to be from teachers? I will have trouble with this because I’ve taken classes full-time at the local university for high school credits since beginning of junior year :/

^ I think that is perfectly acceptable.

Monday sun, I doubt they would know it was the same essays but i really would advise against it anyways. I can’t emphasize enough how different these essays should be than the typical “college essay” (except for perhaps like a university of chicago essay). Plus they are like literally 75% of why you get picked or not for interviews. Seriously, I know it is tempting to think that they pick based on SAT’s or something like that, but I personally know the people who pick these awards and they are not the type to go for the super high stats or the obvious ivy league candidates.

I was wondering about the teacher recs, not the essays. Of course I would not choose to use the same essays, the ones for chancellors are totally ridiculous! I think I’m going to use the same teachers recs but will ask them to maybe alter the format a little, for the originals were rather good.

Wait, what’s perfectly acceptable schrizto? My problem is the only academic person I could get to write a rec would be my guidance counselor… then the only teachers I’ve had the past two years are professors at the university here, and none of them know me that well because they were typically larger lecture classes or math classes, and I’m very shy and keep to myself in all of those :/

Oh, sorry I thought you were asking if it was okay to get recs from professors. Should’ve read it more carefully.
