Is Regents only for in State students?
My son received the Chancellor invitation on 2/16 but not the Regents as of Saturday. Based on his stats compared to a few others that posted that they received the Regents packet, I’m surprised. We are SoCal and will be attending the LA one.
No invite for my D.
@Lorshim1965 . This is what I have learned from this application season so far. Stats is just one part of the final decision making factor. There are so many other soft factors. You didn’t have a chance to read other people’s essay, your race, first generation college student, family income level, geography and pure luck. The admission committee wants to have a well rounded class, not well rounded individual.
Maybe I misunderstood the other posts that said it was the top 2% of applicants that were offered Regents. That made it sound like it was purely academic. Yes, it would be nice to have it be more holistic.
As a reference, my D 1480 SAT 4.0 UW / 4.4 Weighted. Lots of AP’s, 5’s on all tests. Decent EC’s, white female, upper middle class. Didn’t get to read her essays. So far no love from any of the UC’s. Purely anecdotal…but I’m guessing from some of the stats I have seen, if no hooks, SAT of 1500/GPA 4.0W/4.3UW seems to be the appropriate cutoff. If you are URM, low income, hardships, etc., the GPA and SAT thresholds are lowered slightly.
@sandiegodad2017 . Frankly speaking, SAT 1480 is relatively low. If she has 4.0UW and 5’s on all tests, she should be able to get at least 1550 easily.
@Laketahoe79 Wasn’t trying to infer that the 1480 was high…was relaying that she probably missed the mark on her stats based on the information I’ve gathered.
@sandiegodad2017 Totally understood. I meant AO might also have the same question as I have when they see the SAT 1480. There is a disconnection between this percentile to her school grades and AP scores.
I received the Chancellors invite, but what does it actually mean? Does it mean admittance? Does everybody get one?
@Laketahoe79 Well, everyone says UC’s are heavily focused on GPA - let’s hope that rings true in my D’s case.
@sandiegodad2017 Your D shouldn’t have any problem to get admission from the UCs:). It’s just a timing difference. I’m totally with you. My D is kinda in the same situation. She also has very strong statistics, but didn’t get merit scholarship invite from USC and Berkeley. After rounds of rounds disappointment, UCSD Regents is definitely a surprise to us. One more month, hang in there!
Good luck to your D!
@Laketahoe79 Congrats on UCSD Regents! Hadn’t even heard that those were announced.
@sandiegodad2017 OOPS. I meant UCSB:).
@Lorshim1965 Anything today? It appears that those who got later invites are not on the Regents list.
@jlarbs Nothing today. He has a 4.0U/4.76W gpa, ranked 4/550, 1550 SAT (taken once as a Junior), 800s on SAT IIs (Math2 and Physics), National AP Scholar with all 5s on 8 APs by end of Junior year, Eagle Scout, lots of community service, volunteers as a tutor at local library, and he’s a pretty good writer and thought his essays were strong. I guess you just don’t know how the selection works. Congrats to those that received the Regents package!
I don’t know how stats works in this case, but my DS: GPA - 4 W 4.7. SAT 1590 - SAT math2, bio and chem- 800. 11 APs (5 senior year) all 5, until now. Volunteer with unprivileged kids for years. President of 3 clubs in his HS. CSSA - freshman year, internship last two summers in biotech. He got regents UCSB, but didn’t at UCB.
There are so many other factors the U.C.'s look at. From what someone in admissions told me, “leadership, class office, volunteering, club presidents are a dime a dozen.” GPA and test scores are only one factor of the holistic admissions. They also look at the high school students went to and the opportunities for AP and Honors classes. For example at our suburban high school in the Bay there are no honors classes offered. My daughter got the Chancellor’s invite but no Regents letter. Her Stats are 4.3 Weighted, 4,0 UW, 1490 Sat, class officer, leadership, Varsity Vb, etc… Good luck to all!
Should we conclude, based on some of the prior posts, that getting the invite does not guarantee getting the Regent’s? Also, there is nothing on the school’s site that says the Regent’s is limited only to CA residents, but it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that they favor in state residents. Thoughts?
With regard to the “top 2%”, the school does not precisely define what that means. They indicate that they take a holistic view… so, we can guess about what the formula is… but probably pointless to compare stats.
